Westlock Regional Waste 07.11.2020

With winter approaching we want to remind people that the waste facility may be slick or wet, come prepared for such weather. Also, we have a policy with zero tolerance for abuse to staff by public, this includes ignoring directions, calling staff names and giving staff the finger. They are doing their job to ensure all are safe and that we are abiding by all Federal and Provincial legislation and regulations to the best of their abilities. If you have concerns about procedures please contact manager directly and I will be glad to hear your concern plus explain why we do things a specific way. Abusing staff may lead to being banned from landfill for a period of time. Some have been banned permanently. We take abuse seriously and staff do not deserve being treated this way. Thank you. Tom

Judges say it is no big deal that criminals break in to the landfill and steal stuff, after all it is just the dump! Here are just a few pictures of what we have to deal with from these crooks.

So I was called all sorts of names because people are having problems of having to drive on top of landfill cell to dump. First of all the roads and turn around have at least 10 to 12 inches of packed dirt and gravel on them, so you ARE NOT driving right on the garbage. The garbage you see in those areas are from loads dumping in the road or turn around and us having to push it, along with dirt that was there, to where it goes. We then go back when we have time and put on ...more dirt. The reasons we need you to go to where we are compacting the waste are: 1. We get better compaction when we compact waste where it is dumped, rather then having to push a few hundred feet, as has been done in the past. Compaction is important as we try to extend the life of the landfill by getting as much waste into a cubic meter. So far we have extended the life of the current cell by one year, with an estimated 6 months more once we do our calculations. What does that mean? Instead of spending $300,000 For a new cell every 4 years, we can extend it to maybe 5 1/2 to 6 years, thus keeping capital costs down per year. Compaction in small areas is also important it reduces garbage blowing around all over and helps keep odors down. 2. By not having to waste time and equipment energy pushing waste a long distance we can keep fuel and equipment costs down. Nails on landfill, approaches, etc are mostly from people unloading in the road or on turn around, we try to push it back and cover it, but it is not perfect. Going to landfill may cause flats, that is part of going there. I drive directly onto the cell myself 5 or 6 times a day, yes I get flats, but mainly when I get off main areas we have for customers or when I spin my tires. Also, the roads on the site have nails and screws from vibrating out of trucks and trailers. We run a magnet as often as possible, as well as on the landfill itself. The most nails we pick up is on the roads, The practice of driving across landfill cell is a common practice, not new. I would appreciate that people not taking their disagreement with the practice with staff, they work hard to provide as good an approach and system as possible, depending on weather. The rain has caused a lot of issues this year. I have lost staff from stress caused by customers yelling and calling staff names because the customer was asked to dump in a specific place. There can be many reasons you are asked to go into a specific area. By choosing to dump where you want actually opens you up to more flats, or getting stuck, or other issues. You can also cause hazards for other customers or staff. Staff will not intentionally direct you to an area where you will have issues. Also by dumping way out from the designated area, you are creating issues for the next person backing up as they have to drive over your trash, and perhaps causing flats. Thank you. Tom

We have had some complaints about the approach into the landfill. We have been trying hard with all this rain to keep it passable but our loader for pushing the waste has been down for 2 weeks and made it hard to keep it smooth. The packer has large cleats on the wheels and makes things rough, but is all we had. We can not dump off the cell as it is against Alberta Environment regulations so it means people have to wait and unload one at a time. The loader is back up and... running so we hope to have it cleaned up fast and be more accessible. That said, high rain falls reduces traffic ability for dumping, so when staff ask that you wait in line, please follow instructions. We had 2 near missed because people got impatient and backed in almost hitting another person. Everyone's safety is important and we take it seriously. If a person is not willing to follow instructions I will ban you from the site as I do not want anyone hurt or killed. Injuries at landfills are not usually minor and there is at least one death in Canada a year. Please take your time and let's all be safe. Thank you

I am confused. Staff explain where waste materials go. We have signs saying what can go there, yet people still do this. THIS can be a $10,000.00 fine to landfill. Please follow directions and signs.

GOOD NEWS, we were able to obtain the necessary safety equipment for our recycle staff, so we are opening it back up today. There will be a few changes relative to time as staff have to clean the area residents come in to at least once a day, so doors will close to recycle centre one hour before facility closing there will be bins outside for those that come later, however. Please nothing like dirty tissues or pop/beer/water containers with any liquid in them. Remember if you are not willing to handle others materials the way you leave it neither do we. Thank you. Tom
