The OD rainbow As you can see there are many different hues and shades of OD seen on the M1 helmet of WW2. As with many countries at the time (Germany being a prime example) paint colour standardization success was minimal at best. Although a standard colour was selected and given to factories, the factories developed their own ways of mixing up the colour resulting in the wide range of helmet colours seen around the world. Here are some helmets, all original WW2 shells - the bottom 3 are restorations I have done and the top 2 are original WW2 finish. Here I've brought them outside to show the colours in natural light. I have replicated to the best of my ability some of the original tones of OD on my restorations as well as the very specific look of the factory applied cork texturing.
4th M1 helmet restoration this week I'm getting pretty good at this
FS SB 29th ID finished It has one of the best cork jobs I've ever done with a restored Korean war liner (same specs as WW2) and the absolute best yin yang I've painted to date. Needless to say, I'm pretty pleased with how this one came out. Obviously it's missing a chinstrap. As soon as JM starts shipping here again I can get that on
1 FS FB and 1 FS SB WW2 m1 helmets freshly corked
Third times a charm I believe I've finally cracked the code of the cork. Here is my original FS FB McCord helmet (left) and my freshly repainted (for the third time) personal FS FB Schleuter shell (right) ... I'm pretty pleased with the results and although I have some ideas to make the next one even better, I feel like I'm finally ready to kick production into high gear ...as long as the weather allows
Original ckl64 m42 shell repainted with the correct late war dark feldgrau with heavy aluminum oxide texturing finished for a returning client
