WESTPORT LIONS DONATE TO GIVE THE GIFT OF LIGHT There is a supply of lights and other decorations at Westport Town Hall as they try to Give the Gift of Light in the village this year. The village received some private donations to cover these costs and Lions Jim Scala presented a $250 cheque from the Westport Lions Club towards the effort last week.
SANTA CLAUS VISITS WESTPORT The parade may have been cancelled, but the Westport Lions Club gave the village taste of Santa on Saturday as Lion Paul Thorp departed from the beach for a tour around Westport with the man in red.

So many thanks to 2 Westport Lions 'Elves' who delivered y/our Christmas Cake a short while ago... Thanks Helen & Gary... this has brightened our every year since we immigrated to Rideau Lakes what seems like so many years ago ... but today, you also brought this Sunday morning SUNSHINE (after a couple of dreary days)... so even more appreciated this 2020! Beyond y/our annual cake, you bring so much else to so many other residents neighbors -- and I've been happy to have ...been able to both 'pay back' and 'pay it forward' --through the little way I've been able to help you out -- and I do look forward to returning to driving patients without transportation to their medical appointments after this C19 situation improves for all of us 'geezers'. Please STAY WELL all of you... and in concert with the cool saying "You ROCK", your motto is well and truly fulfilled around here: "YOU REALLY DO SERVE"!!!! Toby Stewart
Betty Jo Greenaway MacDougall 19h Thank you to the Westport Lions their very welcome gift of a Christmas cake this afternoon (I LOVE Christmas cake!), to Dorothy Maynard, who so kindly delivered it, and to Rubie for her beautiful handmade card and neatly-printed heartwarming message! LIONS ' MEDICAL MOBILITY SERVICE RESUMES MONDAY The Lions’ Medical Mobility Service is back serving the residents of the Elgin and Westport areas. Starting on October 5th, the MMS will begin transporting people to their doctors’ appointments, but under new rules. The new protocols are designed to keep volunteer drivers and clients safe. The caravan will be the only vehicle used. We regret that we cannot accommodate clients that have mobility issues. All passengers must... be able to get in and out of the vehicle unassisted. The caravan is fitted with a screen for the driver’s protection, and the client will be required to sit in the back seat. The driver and client must wear facemasks at all times. The client uses the rear curbside door to enter and exit the van. If the passenger wishes to leave a donation he/she will place it on the seat. Upon returning to the Lions’ garage, the driver disinfects all touched surfaces. If you wish to book transportation to a medical appointment, you should call 613-273-5789 and leave a message at least one week before the appointment. This message should include your name, civic address, phone number and the date, time and location of the appointment. With limited volunteers available, and only one van in operation, the earlier you book the better the chance we will be able to transport you. We can accommodate one client per day, Monday to Friday. In the event we cannot fulfill a request, we will try to notify the client at least 48 hours in advance so they can make alternative arrangements. Westport Lions Mobility Service is made possible through the generous donations of the Elgin Lions Club, our clients, the spring breakfast put on by The Cove, the Adrain family, Byran Colford, and memorial gifts. For information about donating to the mobility van, see our donation page on our website, westportlions.ca. The demand for our mobility van service has steadily increased over the years. If you are interested in being a volunteer driver, please call 613-273-5789 and leave a message or email us at [email protected]. Starting Oct. 5, the Lions will begin transporting people to doctors' appointments, but under new rules.
LIONS $10,000 DRAW TICKETS SELLING WELL Funds from the success of the Lions’ Spring Draw allowed the club to make some needed repairs to the Lions’ gazebo. The gazebo has been recently painted and this week Lions Wayne Bent and David Lowery spent a total of 36 hours removing the old shingles, replacing rotten wood, installing underlay and shingling the gazebo. Although the roof is not high or large, it was difficult to shingle because the roof is made up of four sections,... each requiring cutting a lot of material. The Westport Lions Club thanks Wayne and David for their community service. Also, Lion Dale Lyons stopped by to help clean the grounds and carry shingles to the roofers. Many thanks to Lion Rick Warriner who generously lent his trailer to the project and took the old shingles to the dump. The gazebo and clubhouse were built around the same time in 1991. Before then, swimmers changed in the stone building north of the clubhouse. If you have any information or pictures of the construction of the gazebo, please email them to [email protected] or call Bob Reddick at 613-273-3499. Just a reminder that the Lions’ recycle depot located at 245 Mountain Road is only open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until October 3. Gather up any metal you have and bring it in soon. Lion Dorothy Maynard reports that ticket sales on the $10,000 draw on October 10 are going well. There are only 200 tickets printed, so if you wish to purchase a ticket, don’t dally. You can buy a $100 ticket from any Lion or by calling Dorothy Maynard at 613-273-2079. Lions Wayne Bent and David Lowery installing a new roof on the gazebo at the Lions’ beach.
