I'm willing to bet a lot of Canadians outside of Nova Scotia don't know who Carrie Best is. And I was one of those people until I met her in 2001. Carrie was my husband’s Great Aunt and we had the pleasure of visiting her on our honeymoon. She was a firecracker then at 98 years old and still had a sharp mind and a great sense of humour. At the time, I had no appreciation for what this amazing woman accomplished in her career and the lengths at which she went to advocate for Black people across Canada. It really makes you realize, how little Canadian Black History we were taught in school, how little it was talked about at home, and how little we have learned on our own.
