Rural Albertans Are NOT Second Class Citizens in Alberta Call Your MLA & Voice Your Concern AHS is rolling out a program to fund physiotherapy under the declared objective to " Standardize Physiotherapy Access for all Albertans". But it is nothing but that. As per the program people living in Edmonton and Calgary can go to any private clinics in these cities and avail the treatments without any delay and paid by AHS. But people in rural Alberta have to go to hospitals, where ...they have to wait an average 6 weeks to 3 months to be seen by a physiotherapist. The rural private clinics are barred from the AHS contract. AHS is treating the rural Albertans like second class citizens, even though there is a greater need exists for these services in rural areas. In the cities most of the people hold employment with health benefits, where in rural Alberta citizens work in farming or small businesses without health benefits. Rural hospital waiting time for physiotherapy appointment currently varies from 6 weeks to 3 months or they have to pay from their pocket to go to a private clinic but the people living in Edmonton and Calgary under this program get access the same day as they can go to any private clinic of their choice and will be funded by AHS. The people who will be suffering the most will be seniors, single parent families and low income families. Especially during this COVID time when most of the rural towns are going through very difficult time. Specialty Physiotherapy services like pelvic floor rehab, treatment for concussion, vertigo, Jaw pain and IMS are not mostly available in rural hospitals, which are mostly provided by the private clinics in rural Alberta. Under this new sneaky AHS program implementation, people in need of these services have to pay from own pocket, but people in Edmonton and Calgary will get it free. Wetaskiwin Physical Therapy has raised this issue through the MLA, and brought into the attention of the Deputy. Minister of Health. Call your MLA regarding this injustice and it is your right to be treated equal not second class just because you live in rural Alberta. Time is running out as if you do not act quick you will be deprived of these services for ever as AHS is scheduled to start the program from April 1st., 2021
