Nail Polish & Your Toenails Nail polish is generally safe to use on toenails, but long-term use of nail polish without giving your nails an adequate break can lead to damage. The danger with keeping nail polish on too long is that the chemicals in nail polish can soak into the top layers and dry it out (notice the white spots on the toenails in these pictures) ... This can lead to bacteria and fungus entering through the nail plate and developing under the nail, causing potential long-term damage. You may also notice a mild yellow/orange colour of the nails which is caused by the nail polish pigment absorbing into the nail plate and staining/dyeing the top layers of nail. Here are some tips to help with proper toenail care when wearing nail polish: - Never leave nail polish on for longer than 3 weeks at one time - Give your nails 2-4 weeks before reapplying polish - Consider using nail polish that is free from harsh chemicals (advertised as 5-free or 10-free nail polishes) - If white/chalky spots are present, gently file/buff the nail and apply vitamin E oil to the nail and surrounding skin - To prevent yellow/orange staining, consider using a clear base coat prior to nail colour application If nails do not resolve, contact your local chiropodist

Onychomycosis is an infection in the toenails (or fingernails) caused by fungus. Symptoms of toenail fungus may include: Thickening of the affected nail(s) Discolouration (yellow dark discolouration) Change in nail shape... Lifting of the nail(s) Crumbling of the nail(s) How can I prevent toenail fungus? 1) Keep your toenails trimmed short and straight across: this prevents debris from getting underneath the nails and decreases your risk of toenail injuries 2) Wear properly fitting shoes: poor fitting shoes can increase your risk of toenail damage/trauma. Toenail trauma may cause the nail to lift and allow fungus to enter the nail bed area 3) Choose breathable footwear: fungus thrives in warm, moist areas such as sweaty shoes. Try to let your shoes air/dry out before wearing again. Ensure that you are wearing socks that help wick away moisture and never re-wear socks before washing 4) Avoid going barefoot in public places such as pools or change rooms: It is important to always wear socks/sandals or slippers in public places to avoid picking up fungus 5) Never share nail clippers or nail files: Ensure that each person in the house has their own nail clippers and nail files. If using a nail salon, ask about their sterilization process and ensure that everything has been properly cleaned and sanitized Can I get rid of my toenail fungus? YES! Toenail fungus is treatable, and there are many different options available. If you think you might have toenail fungus, call us today to discuss what might work best for you!
