Today is National Housing Day in Canada. As an agency we are proud of the work we do - but know there’s more to be done. Now, more than ever, National Housing Day is an opportunity to reflect on the work that still needs to be done. As our communities recover from the pandemic, we need to ensure that everyone in Canada has access to affordable and equitable housing. ~ Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

Yesterday we were honoured to have a visit from and give a tour to the Alliwonga Foundation. This incredible family does incredible things for our community. We were presented with a very generous cheque, that will help us continue to grow & develop our Kids First Programs! Thank you to Remy, Grace, Sebastian (and their awesome parents Amy & Jonathan). We appreciate not only your generosity and support - but your interest in what we are doing at WFHCP/Community Family Fitness Centre!

Hey Windsor-Essex, We are in need of sponsors for our Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program. Please share this and spread the word. Sponsoring a local family makes an incredible impact and there are so many families who otherwise may not have the privilege of presents under a tree. Please contact us with any inquiries.

One year ago we celebrated transforming the first pic into the second; a space dedicated to health and fitness for youth. It has been an integral part of programs like: Nourishing Young Minds and Strike & PA Day Camps. It has been an internship opportunity for our partnership with the St. Clair College Fitness & Health Promotion Program; and even host to staff wellness hours! We LOVE this facility. Due to COVID-19, our programs have been halted - including our planned March Break and summer camps. We have taken this time to get creative and develop a plan to put the gym to even better use!! Stay tuned, #YQG - WFHCP has big, incredible plans to announce!!

Over the past week, we have brought you behind the doors of WFHCP and outlined for you our approach to a healthy life for our tenants and the community, through healthy home, healthy body and healthy mind. It is our mission to have a community where everyone is able to thrive in a safe and affordable home. We strive to provide everything a family requires to live their best, healthiest life in a safe, affordable home. Just as important, we work hard to bring awareness to..., and find sustainable solutions, regarding social issues. We educate the public on the use of food banks, the need throughout the community for the services we provide, the enhancement of traditional food bank items with more nutritional options, the of realities of homelessness and the evidence based best practices to help find solutions not just band aids. Many of the programs, supports and services we provide are not funded, so we rely on the generosity of the community and collaborations with community partners. Your donations are important to this agency and its supports and programs. They help fund our Christmas baskets and Christmas party for our tenants, sponsor families at Christmas, fill our Kids First Food Bank shelves, provide the many Kids First programs and Kids First Fitness activities to name a few. You always get to choose where you want your donation to go. To follow long with the great things happening here at the agency, check out our quarterly newsletters here https://www.wfhcp.com/newsletters/

And the winner is...

Windsor Family Homes and Community Partnerships 17.01.2020

Welcome to our Social Media Behind-Closed-Doors Virtual Tour - Day 4. Over the past couple days, we have explained how we execute a healthy home and healthy body approach to serving the community. We understand that to achieve a well-rounded healthy life, you must be in a state of good mental health as well. Without good mental health, it is more difficult to complete the circle of a healthy life. That is where our healthy mind aspect of our supports and programs come ...in. Pre-COVID, we offered Nourishing Young Minds an after-school program, open to children ages six and up that incorporates group discussions and an hour fitness class. We also ran Kids First Day Camps that stimulated the minds, incorporated fitness and provided a healthy snack. In addition to the wellness visits to our tenants, pre-COVID, we were working on new supports groups such as Womens Empowerment, Youth Groups and more. We are currently developing a post-COVID support program to help those who have been isolated during this pandemic get back to some sense of normalcy after a long period of social isolation - there is going to be a huge need for mental health supports in the coming months and we are putting the wheels in motion to ensure we have those in place. This is where community collaboration and donors are extremely important to us as we move forward with our plans to achieve healthy minds in our community.

Windsor Family Homes and Community Partnerships 14.01.2020

We had a pasta-tively nice visit today. Representatives from Legion 143 stopped by to donate this saucy donation. Thank you for thinking of us, we will be thrilled to also share the cans of sauce with organizations who prepare food. #ShareTheLove #YQG

Welcome to our Social Media Behind-Closed-Doors Virtual Tour - Day 3. It is not enough to only make sure our tenants have a healthy home, we provide the things that people need in order to feel less vulnerable that includes putting a priority on healthy body and healthy mind as well. Our healthy body initiatives do not stop at our tenants, our programs and supports incorporate nutrition and fitness into the lives of the community who may not otherwise have the means... to participate in organized sports or hold gym memberships. We believe in the importance of everyone having fun, family access to fitness and nutrition. We operate Kids First Food Bank with an awareness that people, especially children, need protein for brain development, as well as foods that provide vital micro-nutrients. We not only keep our pantry stocked with the usual canned goods and non-perishables that are commonly donated, but we also stock our freezers and fridges with fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs and milk. We depend on monetary donations and community collaborations to help us achieve this important selection to the 900 people per week that use our services. to compliment the nutritional aspect of healthy body, Kids First Fitness offers a variety of fitness classes for everyone in the family, promoting an active lifestyle for an overall healthy body. In addition, we host day camps on strike, PD, March Break and summer days, all free of charge, including a lunch and snacks. We offer nutrition classes, field trips to theatres, local parks etc. None of this is funded and we thank our sponsors and donors to help us offer these important programs.

Windsor Family Homes and Community Partnerships 10.12.2019

Welcome to our Social Media Behind-Closed-Doors Virtual Tour - Day 2. Lets start from the beginning and explain Healthy Home. first and foremost, we are a social housing agency providing affordable housing to our community's most vulnerable - and have been doing so since 1976. ... Since 2018 we have housed 14 people and three families who were chronically homeless, from the By Names Prioritized List - all who are still successfully housed. Statistically, those who have been experiencing homelessness for a long period of time, often have difficulty maintaining their housing. We currently own roughly 130 units throughout Windsor, offering 75% of these homes as rent-geared-to-income (RGI) housing. A large percentage of our tenants include individuals and families on low income and individuals and families on fixed incomes, including seniors and people with disabilities. We continue to add a variety of homes and properties to our portfolio including single family homes, duplexes, all the way up to six-plex residential housing units, making it possible to fill the varying needs of many individuals and families in Windsor. To maintain successful housing, evidence based best practice and data shows that supports in housing works. We use a housing first approach which means in home supports, - this part of our programming is not funded therefore we must not only collaborate with our community partners, but insure we have a social worker on site to provide mental health support, referrals and regular wellness check ins that provide in-home support and advocacy to our tenants (and yes, sometimes this means just a visit for socialization). Our social worker helps tenants overcome barriers that may affect their success. The supports we offer our tenants are possible through the generosity of our donors and community partners.
