As many of us spend time over the next few days with our families, and have the chance to take time for ourselves, I wanted to share a special Christmas version of the #SPARKStory Holiday Series featuring a conversation with Simon Mallett about his journey over the last 8 years with Theatre Calgary’s A Christmas Carol.

Day 5 Thoughts

What does it look like when we show up to our lives, the teams we’re part of and our relationships putting into action the talents that make us stand out? CliftonStrengths helps us explore each of these and the book Strengths Based Leadership is an amazing resource that looks at the power of pairing our most innate talents with our leadership style.

While the models I shared yesterday and Monday tend to be used more in work with students, I see Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership Model used often within HR and staff development programs. In particular I love the names given to the five practices and have seen incredible leaders and managers use these in their work. Those five practices are: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and my favorite Encourage the Heart.

Today, I introduce the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership. This is the model I have used most, and explores leadership from individual, group and community perspectives. The SCM also introduces readers to the seven C’s of leadership, from the perspective of both social change and socially responsible leadership.

Over the last thirteen years, a central part of my career has focused on empowering others to explore what leadership means to them and develop their leadership style. Over the next five days, I’m going to share some of the different resources I’ve drawn from in that time. This morning we start with the book Exploring Leadership. Though specifically for post-secondary students, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the history of the word leadership, some of the most commonly used models, exploring their leadership style, or helping someone else explore theirs.
