Our apprentices are finishing their season with us and one of our apprentices Karina, shared a thoughtful and genuine message about her experience working on a farm. . Reposted: This is my most memorable moment of the season - running outside when we finally got a rainfall marking the end of a 6 week drought which killed thousands of our crops. I’ve posted the lovely stuff - the flowers, sunrises, bugs, and amazing farm-mates (and dog). But the reality is that there really ...isn’t any glamour in farming. It’s detrimental to your body. The outcome of your labour is at the complete mercy of the weather, the persistence of pests, soil health, and countless other challenges. You’re an essential worker that is constantly challenged with societal misconceptions (such as being undereducated, or living in a rustic homesteading fantasy). And many farmers are barely making ends meet. But, is it ever rewarding. Seeing how excited people got from receiving our produce; walking into a greenhouse full of tomatoes that seemed to have ripened in the hundreds overnight; grunting with disgust yet laughing every time my hand went right through a rotten ‘mother potato - farming isn’t glamorous, but it’s incredibly fulfilling. I came to Wheelbarrow Farm as a researcher, and quite frankly got my ass handed to me. I’m leaving with a humbling appreciation and endless respect for those who grow our food, and a newfound understanding that immense changes to agricultural policies and the current economic system must be made to sustain and rejuvenate our crumbling food system, and protect the people in it. I fully believe that agriculture is the foundation of our society, and farmers and agricultural workers are severely under-valued. In the Western world especially we experience such a disconnect from our food, and tend to be ignorant of *who* it comes from. Farmers dedicate their lives to feeding us. Support your local farmers and take some time to learn about the origins of your food, and consider how many miles and hands a single vegetable travelled to get to you. To the @wheelbarrowfarm team, (and every other farmer, migrant worker and every other person working towards a just food system), I can never thank you enough for everything you do.

We're almost halfway through our CSA (community supported agriculture) season and we have so much more to come! Tomatoes and eggplants have handled the heat well and are starting to make appearances in our baskets. We also added bonus beets and basil this week. So many members have also told me they are LOVING the fresh onions. I absolutely love seeing all the incredible food that everyone is making, especially now that many people have more time at home. Yesterday's CSA basket looking very lush and green We grew some new purple ribbed dandelion greens this season which look beautiful, but are also a natural detoxifier, great for digestion and full of vitamins and minerals. When we put our single CSA baskets up for sale four weeks ago, at the start of this crisis, we asked our customers for help. We asked for those who were able, if they could donate $20 worth of vegetables towards emergency food services. The generosity from our community was inspiring...over the course of two basket sales, our customer donations totalled 450lbs! We will be matching the donation and providing a total of 900lbs(!) of root vegetables across two organizations: The Stop Community Food Centre and Black Creek Community Farm + FoodShare Toronto Both are seeing overwhelming increase in demand for their services such as emergency food boxes and free take away meals. We cannot thank them enough for the critical work they are doing to feed the community.

We know finances are tight right now for so many of us. To ensure as many people as possible can access fresh, local, safe vegetables all year long, we are offering affordable and flexible payment plan options for our CSA vegetable baskets. A full season of our baskets is $420, but we are happy to split this into three more manageable payments across the season. $140 deposit to secure your share, then $140 by July 1st and the final $140 by Oct 1st. We are all navigating a very difficult and uncertain time, but our farm is working hard to ensure our food gets to you, when you need it most. Growing wont stop, vegetables still need to be eaten! We were planning to be back at Wychwood Barns farmers' market but with it's temporary shut down, many of the vendors, including us, are finding new ways to get our products out to the local community. Our farmer Tony will be coming in from the farm to drop off $30 veggie boxes next... PROJECT GLEANING - this year we have been working with Nourish and Devlop foundation in Cannington, ON. Volunteers come to our farm and rescue any excess vegetables which are then shared through community meals, enhancing local food security. . Our farmers work incredibly hard to grow, harvest and prepare the vegetables so we never want to see good food going to waste. This project is great as it not only minimizes this food waste, but brings people together sharing a delicio...us and healthy meal. . On Friday we shared one of those delicious meals at their 'Dine for a Cause' gala dinner. The event raises money which goes towards their community initiatives. Most items have been harvested that very morning, so you are receiving the freshest vegetables possible! -Baskets are delivered every second Wednesday, 3pm-7pm, from mid-May until early November. -Baskets will be delivered to community drop-off locations and CSA members pick their baskets up from there.
