Clients often ask What’s better: manual toothbrush or electric?. . My reply is always the same: Electric. Hands down! . Upgrading to an electric toothbrush is like going from carrier pigeons to an iPhone . Like night to day. The built-in oscillation & vibration is not only way more effective at removing plaque than your manual, but gentler too, giving your gums the stimulation they need to improve their vascularity & keratin production .... . More vibration means less plaque, which means less inflammation. It also makes life easier on your dental hygienist. . #LIFEHACK : ETBs can be expensive. We often recommend purchasing the kid’s version! It does what the adult version does, except without the bells & whistles. The most important part is making sure there is a 2 minute timer built-in so that you know you’re brushing for the recommended amount. . Depending on the brand, adult & child brush heads can be interchanged. Notice above how mine’s got the Phillips adult ~sensitive~ brush on the child’s console? . Snapped this super smile while on #cortesisland. . So often parents have questions about what oral health products are best for their little ones. . While every mouth IS different , there are some general rules such as...Got a kiddo that always seems to be getting cavities? Try a high fluoride toothpaste such as Clinpro500all you need is a pea-size amount & Littles tend to like to vanilla-mint flavour! ... . Prefer to go fluoride-free? X-Pur REMIN or Cari0 are great options! . Try introducing toothbrushing as soon as teeth erupt and continued massaging of the gums with a soft cloth to help with clearance & stimulation! PRO-TIP: tying the cloth in a knot and placing in the fridge to chill can be especially nice for teething. . Getting your kid in to see a dental professional around the time their first tooth erupts is also a great idea @vanislandhealth offers a free Smiles First program for kids under two. You get to see a Registered Dental Hygienist who can answer all sorts of questions and have a look at how those tiny teeth are doing See more

Q: I hardly eat any sugar but I ALWAYS get cavities! What can I do?! . A: We hear ya; its frustrating feeling like youre never getting on top of your oral health But the secret to preventing cavities has VERY LITTLE to do with the amount of sugar youre consuming and way MORE to do with the type of bacteria thats in your mouth & your unique biological response . . This means that the first step is ~altering~ your oral flora . An easy over-the-counter trick is to use ...a combination of X-Pur Cari0 toothpaste (spoilerits fluoride-free but thats A-OKAY because its got xylitol) & Opti-Rinse mouthwash. Together these products significantly lower cavity-causing bacteria & help to remineralize enamel. . Moderating the amount of fermentable carbohydrates you consume is also an important part Things that are stickythink dried-fruit, bread, are best consumed with water (to help with clearance) and it doesnt hurt to brush/floss afterwards See more

Suns out, balms out! . Now that the suns here, lots of us are out & about, (practicing safe distancing), and even though weve liberally applied SPF to our bods, we often forget our lips . Lips are of the top most common places skin cancer occurs, so its extremely important we protect them from those UV rays! We suggest applying an SPF lip balm, wearing wide-brim caps, or hiding in the basement until winter rolls through....... Self-monitoring for suspicious spots is also important Here are just a few things to watch for 1) Scabbed lesions that heal but then return on repeat 2) Wonky boarders 3) Spots that change colour &/or have a scaly, crusted surface. Keep in mind that most lesions in & around the mouth heal within 2 weeks, so if youve got something pesky & persistent, call up your GP to have them take a closer look See more

Q: Is lemon water bad for my teeth? . A: In short, YES Citrus in general can cause acid erosion when used frequently or in high concentration . The acidic nature of citrus can wear down enamel overtime, ultimately weakening your teeth . If youre someone who loves lemon water, we recommend drinking it in a short period of time, rather than sipping constantly throughout the day. We also suggest not brushing your teeth for at least 30 minutes post-citrus bevy to allow your mouth to naturally increase its pH, otherwise youre just brushing that acidic substance into your enamel. Sip safely, friends

Q: Do I really need to be flossing? A: Wellllll NO, not exactly. But hear us outAside from getting out that pesky popcorn husk, flossing stimulates your gums, creating more keratin cells along your gum-line. This action ultimately improves blood flow while strengthening your gums . More stimulation = less inflammation, less redness, less bleeding & less tenderness.... If flossing really isnt your jam, some excellent alternatives are: sulca brush (seen above), waterpik, proxabrush, rubber-tip OR some elaborate combination the above! The important thing is finding out what works for YOU See more
