we are asking YOU to help us spread some virtual cheer to our grandbuddies! make a message of care (photo, card, letter, drawing), take a picture or scan it and send it to us. We will pass them along to seniors living in residential care to remind them our community us thinking of them!
Exciting news!!! Vancouver Foundation's Neighbourhood Small Grants / Greenest City Grants have released a new program to fund small-scale projects to tackle social isolation, build community strength resilience, and foster community creativity and well-being during the pandemic. The applications are open now and are available across British Columbia. If you have an idea to support folks in your neighbourhood, please check it out!! https://neighbourhoodsmallgrants.ca//new-responsive-nsg-g/
CBC’s The Early Edition asked seniors to call in from the safety of their homes to share their fears, their memories and as we often need from our oldest generation a sense of perspective. Here are the stories of five of the people who called.
Right now @unitedwaylowermainland and bc211 are partnering to get isolated seniors connected with volunteers across BC to help deliver groceries and medications and provide friendly phone visits. If you are able to help out please visit www.bc211.ca and click on Strong Seniors, Safe Communities to apply. - If you have any questions please message us as we can help you get set up!
Don't forget to reach out to your grandparents, an elderly neighbour and other seniors in your life to check in. Many seniors already experience social isolation and loneliness that is exacerbated with the current isolation recommendations. Calling, Face-timing, or writing a letter can make a world of difference for our elders! https://medium.com//now-is-not-the-time-to-sever-the-ties-
Meaningful relationships between young and old can enhance self esteem and social skills, contribute to better emotional health and a greater sense of community belonging. Here's hoping 2020 brings more friendships across generations and cultures!
