#Reposted from @soroush.khazraei, "As most of Canadian cities are getting varying levels of snow falls, here are some interesting facts and common misconceptions about snow! - Snow is absolutely translucent, and hence it isn't white. It's the light reflecting off of it that makes it appear white. - At different temperature ranges, the design of the snowflakes changes! There are currently 35 different types of snowflakes which have been catalogued.... - Freshly fallen snow absorbs sound waves, giving everything a seemingly hushed, quieter ambience after a snow fall. - There is a phobia associated with snow! It's called chionophobia and mainly is attributed to a childhood trauma involving snowy accidents. - Because snow is comprised of 90 to 95 percent trapped air, it means it's a great insulator. This is the reason many animals burrow deep into the snow during winter in order to hibernate." #fridayfun #snow #snowdays #beautiful

#repost from @soroush.khazraei, "The Golden Eagle, is a magnificent prey. With a length close to a meter and wings that span well over two meters, it is one of the largest raptors in western Canada. In most of North America the Golden Eagle is stable or increasing in population and its primary diet is of rats and squirrels and other mid-sized mammals. This capture of this bug guy, was by Wilmer wetland of the East Kootenay, while he was chasing some ducks!"... #wow #amazingshot #eagle #beautiful #wildlifewednesday #goldeneagle

Wild ice skating is an unforgettable phenomenon that happens during early winter in the Rockies. What is wild ice skating, you ask? The simplest explanation is ...skating on a crystal clear, frozen lake before it's covered in snow. Here's what Banff local and avid wild ice skater Paul Zizka Photography has to say about this increasingly popular sport. *Please note that skating on frozen bodies of water can be very dangerous. Always check with your local authorities before skating.

"Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary recently undertaken a mission to rescue 13 animals from a situation where, to no fault of their own, were at risk of being euthanized. Ten of the animals rescued are wolfdogs and Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary has answered their call for help and the need for a proper and safe space to call home. The remaining three animals are sled dogs and will be brought into the care of another rescue organization once we have provided these animals with the veteri...nary care they deserve. With 10 more wolfdogs added to the Yamnuska family, we now are home to 37 wolfdogs! We are launching the From Alone to Home: Wolfdog Rescue Campaign that aims to raise the necessary funds to cover the rescue and enclosure costs of these 13 animals to provide them a safe, secure, and enriching home. This includes the veterinary costs of all animals and the critical need to build 3 new enclosures for our 10 new resident wolfdogs. We greatly appreciate all donations, big or small, as well as any shares to help spread the word." Donate to help save these animals, here: http://ow.ly/DC7p50CiRLT

It’s elk rutting season. While the elk bugle is an iconic and beautiful sound that accentuates the fall, bull elk can be aggressive this time of year. Remember to give elk at least 30m of space and don’t get between the male and females, even in your car! You are in danger if an elk lowers his antlers, paws the ground, or appears agitated. @vixenly via @unsplash #elk #rut #bugle #whererockies

"The Canadian Rockies have long captured the hearts and imaginations of everyone who’s visited. The vast and wild spaces have especially spoken to the hearts of artists. In order to get artists inspired by the Rockies, they first had to get here. The latest exhibit from the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies explores the history of art in the mountains and tells the stories of how artists from across Canada and around the world are continually Drawn to the West." http://ow.ly/u2Xi50Bx1WC

Did you know? Larches are deciduous coniferous trees, which means they drop their needles for the winter. This is a unique trait for pine trees, which tend to retain their needles through the cold months, giving them the nickname evergreens. Before larches drop their needles for the winter, they turn a brilliant gold colour, and they attract people from all over to come see their beauty. Larches can often be found in dry and rocky soil, where their roots help prevent erosio...n. They typically grow at higher elevations, and they are a hardy plant for the harsh climate. What is your favourite larch hike in the Canadian Rockies? Banff & Lake Louise Tourism / Paul Zizka Photography
