It is with deep sadness that I post the news of the tremendous loss of our special boy Jake. Jake passed away last week but it has taken until now to share this post with you all. Our dear Jake was brought to Whispering Hearts in December 2013. He came from the Far Enough Farm petting zoo on Toronto Island. When the petting zoo was disbanded, Jake was in need of a new home and a new chapter in his life. Whispering Hearts stepped up to the plate and Jake became a central figur...e at WHHR. Although he had Cushing’s disease and a tumor in his throat necessitating a soft diet of soaked hay cubes, Jake did extremely well during his last years with us. At an impressive over 50 years of age, he became a WHHR celebrity and mascot. Jake was cremated and his ashes came home today. Most of his ashes will be sent home to Toronto Island, where he spent over 40 years of his life. We will bury the remaining ashes here at the rescue under a new apple tree we will plant in his memory so that Jake can live on with us. Most of you knew Jake, but for those of you that did not have the pleasure of meeting him, he was quite the character. From the loud calls each time we came out of the house asking for more soaked hay cubes, to the little nips when your back was facing him while carrying on a conversation in the isle way. Jake loved hugswhen he wanted them. But he certainly made it clear when he wanted to be left alone. He loved the other animals as well as we would find chickens sleeping in his stall with him, and cats snuggling him when it was cold. He also loved to have his lips cleaned by our great dane Angel, he would stand still while she licked away, it was quite funny to watch, I often wondered if Angel would lose part of her tongue! Jake also had his stubborn side and sometimes during open house events, he would turn his but to the stall door when he had enough of humans. He would also pout for a few hours, when we put silly hats on him during the holiday open houses at Easter and Christmas. During his last months with us, he had a friend named Taffy, a blind pony that got along great with Jake as he was also blind for the last few months as well. The barn is so silent now, with loss and emptiness. No more Jake calls, no more Angel licks, no more Jake hugs. There will never be another Jake and as we remember him, please watch this little tribute to Jake and post your memories and photos of our special boy. Rest in Peace Jake, you were so loved here and will never be forgotten. Enjoy your new life over the rainbow bridge eating as much grass, hay and feed as you wishno more soaked hay cubes. Until we meet again.. https://youtu.be/e8p5PaqsGhs

I want to take a moment to reflect on how thrilled I am to see the new Provincial Animal Welfare Services (P.A.W.S) in full swing. After 18 years of pushing and bringing issues forward, I finally feel confident knowing that when I am contacted about an animal concern in this province, and refer the individual to the P.A.W.S hotline, the issue will be investigated and not hidden or swept under the mat. Any dealings I have had with P.A.W.S has been extremely positive. They a...re out there doing a great job. This is a brand new division of the government within the Ministry of the Solicitor General with newly updated legislation; therefore it will take time to work out the wrinkles and get staff to full compliment. However what I have witnessed to date has been outstanding. We need to educate the public to understand that after 100 years OSPCA DOES NOT LOOK AFTER ANIMAL NEGLECT OR CRUELTY, it is the new Provincially mandated organization PROVINCIAL ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICE that responds to cruelty and neglect complaints. IF YOU HAVE FIRST HAND INFORMATION REGARDING AN ANIMAL BEING ABUSED, NEGLECTED OR IN DISTRESS CALL P.A.W.S HOTLINE 1 833 926 4625 OUR ANIMALS IN ONTARIO NOW HAVE PROTECTION AGAINST ABUSE AND NEGLECT https://www.ontario.ca/page/animal-welfare

Big Red Update He is doing well considering the permananty damage inside his hooves from the neglect he endured before he arrived. He now has new shoes that are nailed on which is a huge accomplishment. They are custom made for him. Special thanks to Russ Gaudete as Red's feet look amazing.... We need to keep his hooves clean there for we gave him a spa day today. Mandy Walton groomed and pampered him while we soaked his feet. He loved it! Big Red has become such an amazing boy with so much to teach us. I have learned to never give up hope as miracles do happen when you believe they can. This horse is my personal hero for his courage, strength and will to survive. I appreciate every day we have with him.

Adoption Celebration! Sammy has gone to his forever home! Sammy came to us as an extremely abused and angry horse that was nick named "evil prick". He needed surgery as one testicle was in his abdomen therefore he was a stallion. Sammy was emaciated and had a severe fungal infection on his back.... Sammy became an amazing horse over the past 4 years here. He learned to trust again, however he can still get agitated with men when pushed. Thank you Janice for giving him his family to call his own. He bonded with you extremely well and I know you are a great match. I look forward to watching the journey of Sammy and Janice

Kyza has been found! I found her in an abandoned barn at 1pm today on Concession 8 where she was last seen Sunday morning. We were calling her name and as we started to back out she slithered really scared out of the barn.... She is thirsty and tired and a little shaken. Thank you to everyone that helped us driving around, sharing posts, giving advise and praying. Truly a miracle that we drove in that driveway.
