In the fall of 2020 C.A.R.P. surveyed older Canadians about the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health. More than 5,200 individuals had their say. While only 10% of respondents sought mental health and wellness assistance during the pandemic, 42% said their mental health was ‘worse’ or ‘much worse’ as compared to before the pandemic. The beautiful, well-versed 83 year old lady, fully dressed every morning at 8 am sharp, with her hair done in fashion and perfectly applied makeup, is moving to... a retirement home. Her husband recently died, which motivated her move. After many hours of patiently waiting in the hall of the home, she smiled sweetly, when told her room was ready. As she moved her walker toward the elevator, she was given a detailed description of her small room, including the curtains hanging from her window. I love it ", she said, with the enthusiasm of a 8-year-old girl who was just handed over a new pet. - Mrs. Jones; you haven't seen the room, just wait. - That doesn't matter, she replied. Happiness is something you decide over time. Whether or not I like my room doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged, it depends on how I arrange my mind. I’ve already decided that I like it. It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have the choice; I can spend the day in bed, going through the difficulty I have with my body parts that don't work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the parts that do work. Every day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I will focus on the new day and the happy memories I've stored just for this time in my life. HAPPINESS is like a bank account: you withdraw from it, what you deposit. So my advice would be to deposit a lot of happiness into your memory account. Remember these five simple things: 1.- Free your heart from hate/discord. 2.- Free your mind from worries. 3.- Live Simply. 4.- Give more. 5.- Take less.

C.A.R.P. Letter to City of Surrey Finance Committee regarding unwaranted tax hike. Write your own letter or forward mine. For more info: https://www.surrey.ca/.../committees.../finance-committee C.A.R.P. in Surrey strongly objects to the proposed hike in taxes by roughly 8% per household while continuing to spend untold millions on an expensive and unpopular new Surrey Police Service. C.A.R.P. is Canada's largest non-profit advocacy association for older adults with 320,000 ...members across the country and a substantial number living in Surrey and other areas in British Columbia. Our association is also partnered with numerous other organizations looking out for the interests of seniors and families. We are responding to the City of Surrey's staggering proposed municipal tax increase in 2021 consisting of a 2.9% increase in property taxes, on top of a 200% increase in levies. We have also learned that the Surrey Police Service transition costs will skyrocket by 41% ($18.5M) from 2020 predictions and total costs will be up to ONE QUARTER OF A BILLION MORE. Also, Surrey will sink at least $150M deeper into debt. In the middle of a growing pandemic with unknown economic impacts, we feel Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, and the four councillors who always vote with him, are taking money from vulnerable seniors and families instead of stopping the expensive and unpopular police transition plan. COVID-19 is spreading at an alarming rate. It is unconscionable and totally irresponsible to raise taxes now. Four other elected city councillors (Brenda Locke, Jack Hundial, Steven Pettigrew & Linda Annis) also oppose the hike in tax as well as the police transition at this time. They are ignored by the Mayor as is the public. I have called in to council meetings and have been cut off by the Mayor as have many others. He claims to listen to the public, but it appears he is entirely out-of-touch with the majority of Surrey seniors and families. The Mayor willingly gave up $20.4 million in federal and provincial subsidies and tax benefits associated with the previous RCMP contract, which Surrey taxpayers are also now left to cover. A recent poll showed that 58% of Surrey residents oppose a new police service - with 44% strongly opposed and 70% want a binding referendum on whether to replace the RCMP or not, according to a Pollara poll of Surrey residents commissioned in August by the National Police Federation. C.A.R.P. is adding its voice to the members of City Council and to the residents and groups who believe the Mayor and his team should put the well-being of seniors and families ahead of their pet political project. Please note that The Keep the RCMP in Surrey Campaign has 50,000 signatures opposing the switch or at the very least having a referendum. Sincerely, Ramona Kaptyn President: C.A.R.P. Excerpt: "In the middle of a growing pandemic with unknowable economic impacts, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum is taking money from the pockets of families instead of stopping his expensive and unpopular police transition plan," said Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation. "Imposing a tax increase of at least 8% at a time when COVID-19 is spreading at an alarming rate, is shockingly irresponsible and out-of-touch with Surrey families." The Mayor willingly gave up $20.4 million in federal and provincial subsidies and tax benefits associated with the previous RCMP contract, which Surrey taxpayers are also left to cover.
