WHM worked with pH5 Architecture on renovations to the Cloverdale Library in Surrey. Thanks to PH5 and Nancy Bleck for the photos! This renovation includes an upgrade to the second floor to accommodate more book stacks. Besides upgrading the floor, WHM provided recommendations to how to best position the stacks on existing floor framing which were limited in height and total weight. It was a grey and gloomy afternoon as WHM’s ghosts and ghouls emerged from their office caverns into the unearthly fluorescent light. At high noon, our lunchroom was transformed into a hall of Halloween horrors as everyone devoured pizza and tried to out scare each other. Odra & Will took home the top prizes as pirates with Darryl as an alien abductee as the runner up. Thank you to the social committee and admin team for their Halloween hard work! Congratulations to WHM’s own Kurt Quines for receiving his Professional Engineer designation! Kurt has worked hard to get to this point, and we are very happy to add him to our Wall of Fame. We look forward to seeing what he does next!

It is fundamental for WHM staff to give back to the education community. WHM is excited to include another mass timber project in its portfolio. This upcoming 6-storey mixed-use development will contain 5 levels of residential space on one level of retail and underground parking. The development will feature Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) floors on the residential levels and concrete in the levels below. The simplicity of manufactured CLT panels with the accuracy of CNC cutting will allow this project to be built quickly on site. The floor panels a...re architecturally exposed at the ceiling to providing a naturally textured and warm appearance. A one-hour fire rating is achieved by relying on the charring resistance and slow burn rate of mass timber. Steel beams nested inside the panels provide additional support to allow for open floor plans with fewer walls.
