The last stop on our mindfulness journey is mindful movement. I think we all know we need to move to stay healthy, but what the looks like, how much we need and what form is widely debated. Using mindfulness can help us move in a healthy way that supports us on all levels. We don’t have to run long distances or lift crazy weights to stay healthy. It also doesn’t have to consume hours of your day, because even 7 minutes of activity a day has been shown to have positive health ...benefits that reach far beyond having strong muscles. One of the biggest obstacles people face when it comes to being active is not having enough time. Now many of us have been gifted some extra time. Hopefully this is a time to create healthy habits that will last longer than the current pandemic. #mindfulness #mindful #mindfulmovement #mindfulactivity #stayactive #beactive #movementismedicine #activelife #movementheals #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicclinic #naturopath #naturopathy #ldnont #londonontario

Mindful eating is simply paying attention to your eating experience without judgement. Mindful or intuitive eating helps us be aware of the reasons behind our hunger, whether true physical hunger, eating our feelings, or because of tradition and schedules. This is not a diet, it is a habit, a mindset, a (potentially new) way of eating all of our food. Being mindful allows us to tune into our internal hunger and satiety cues to make healthy decisions about what and how much to... put into our body. There is no right or wrong when it comes to mindful eating, no specific amount or types of food and no set times to be eating. It is listening to your own body to make choices that suit your current individual needs. Some tips for eating more mindfully: - Enjoy the preparation of food: From picking groceries or picking from a menu, to enjoying the sights and smells of food cooking. This sends signals to your body to prepare for healthy digestion. - Create space: This may mean turning off and putting away electronics, clearing the table or eating area of clutter, and setting the table. - Sit down, be still: This helps send cues to your body that it is time to rest and digest. Some people like to start meals by giving thanks or saying grace, but simply having a moment to switch gears can help your body. - Enjoy with all of your senses: Rather than looking at food as fuel, really take the time to chew slowly and indulge in the taste, texture and smell of the food. Listen to the sounds of family or friends connecting, or embrace the silence. - Notice what signals your body is sending: Do you enjoy the food? Does it taste as good as when you started the meal? Maybe your body has had enough or needs more than what was on your plate? Stepping away from what and how we should be eating allows us to create healthy habits that nourish us and make us feel good. #marchmindfulness #letseat #eatdrinkandbemerry #gather #blessed #mindfulliving #mindfulnesspractice #mindfuleating #mindfullife #eatyourfeelings #donteatyourfeelings #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicclinic #naturopath #naturopathy #ldnont #londonontario

#MindfulMarch took a bit of a backseat the last few weeks but now is a great time to work on introducing more mindfulness to our lives. Did you know that how you eat is almost as important as what you eat? Being mindful when you eat helps you taste your food, eat things that make you feel good and listen to your body to know if you are hungry or full. Paying attention to our eating experience can help create healthy food behaviors and improve your relationship with food. Woul...dn’t it be nice to eat what makes you feel good whenever you feel you need it? #marchmindfulness #letseat #eatdrinkandbemerry #gather #blessed #quotestoliveby #mindfulliving #mindfulnesspractice #mindfuleating #mindfullife #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicclinic #naturopath #naturopathy #ldnont #londonontario

In light of the recent public health concerns with COVID-19, we would like you to know that the heath and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors is what matters most. We have taken action consistent with Health Canada, as well as provincial and local authorities. We would like to continue to support all of our patients during this time by continuing to operate as normal, with business hours remaining the same. We are proactively managing the dispensary so that the p...roducts you need are available. We want to ensure that everyone feels comfortable coming into the clinic, therefore we have adopted the screening protocol from Health Canada. If you say YES to any of the following, please remain at home and contact Telehealth Ontario at: 1-866-797-0000 or Middlesex-London Health Unit at: 519-663-5317. * If you have a fever and/or a new cough and/or difficulty breathing * If you have traveled outside of Canada within the last 14 days * If you have had close contact with a confirmed or probable COVID-19 case * If you have been in close contact with a person with acute respiratory illness who has been outside Canada in the last 14 days Following these guidelines is essential for both your safety and the safety of our community. Your continued care is important to us, and we would encourage you to follow your current protocol with the addition of immune support. If any of the criteria listed above apply to you or if you would prefer to remain at home, we offer telephone appointments and can ship supplements to you. Please let us know of any way that we can support you during this time. In times like this, it can be easy to get swept up in the news and let our anxiety take over as we scramble to stock up on toilet paper. Did you know the way you breathe can actually lead to anxiety, tension and fatigue? A simple intervention you can use at any time to help calm your nervous system is mindful breathing. Mindful breathing can be done in many ways, but generally involves bringing awareness to the breath. Trying to deepen the breath, or take belly breaths can ...help to decrease stress by activating relaxation centres in the brain and improving venous flow of blood back to the heart. Meditation comes in many forms, and is often thought of as focused, contemplative time. Meditation has been widely studied and shows many health benefits including reducing pain, anxiety, depression and stress; and boosting your immune system as well! Those are things we could all use these days. One of the biggest obstacles people face is finding time, but research shows even 2-3 minutes of mindful breathing can have positive health benefits. People also feel that they don’t know how to meditate, but truly there is no right or wrong way and simply trying is really the most important part. For these techniques below, it is best to find a quite comfortable place to sit or lay down where you won’t be disturbed. You may find it helpful to place one hand on your chest, and one hand on your abdomen, feeling for your abdomen rising and lowering more than your chest while breathing. The first technique is 4-7-8 breathing. To start, gently exhale to empty the lungs, then slowly inhale through your nose silently counting to 4, trying to really fill the belly. At the top of the breath, hold your breath for a count of 7 (or at least 4 if 7 feels too long). Lastly, slowly exhale through the mouth trying to really empty out the lungs. The second technique is quite similar but is square breathing. This entails breathing in slowly to a count of 4, holding at the top of the breath for 4, slowly exhaling for 4, and holding at the bottom for 4, like a square. Repeat these as many times as you can, or until you feel you feel a sense of calm and relaxation. Simon Rae - Unsplash

It is the first thing we do when we are born, and is essential to maintaining our life, yet so many of us let our breathing go on autopilot. To be fair, if we had to think about each breath we take, it would be more difficult to accomplish some of the complex tasks we do each day. As you read that did you notice your breath deepened? Or maybe you held your breath? How we breathe has such a tremendous effect on how we feel both mentally and physically. Luckily it is something we are already doing all day, every day, so paying attention can happen any time and any place. Stay tuned for more information on Mindful Breathing! #breath #breathe #mindfulbreathing #autopilot #essentialforliving #breathedeep #breatheeasy #breathmore #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicclinic #naturopath #naturopathy #ldnont #londonontario

There are many ideas and definitions about what mindfulness is. The general notion is simply that mindfulness is being aware of your physical, mental and emotional state in the present moment. It is being present with your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations as well as your surroundings without judging or getting caught up in them. How many times have you seen someone crossing the street without looking up from their phone? Or have you ever driven somewhere and realize on...ce you arrive that you don’t fully remember getting there? Our minds often go into autopilot when we are doing everyday or repetitive tasks like brushing our teeth. This is intended to save our brain power for more important things, but what if we start to put everything on autopilot? In order to be our best self, we need awareness of the present moment and our surroundings. Being truly present helps us feel more connected with our life and accept it without making ourselves, our thoughts or our emotion right or wrong, good or bad. It allows us to be aware of the signals our body is sending us, sometimes called symptoms, and give our body what it is asking for. Today, try taking one everyday task and really being present with it, notice what happens. #bemindful #mindfulness #mindfulnessrules #beingaware #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicclinic #naturopath #naturopathy #ldnont #londonontario See more
