Dear Families, RE: January 4-8, 2021 At Home Learning As you are aware, the Government of Alberta has indicated our students will be working from home the week of January 4-8, 2021. Teachers will be sending home a learning package of materials on Wednesday, December 16 or Thursday, December 17. The package will contain literacy and numeracy activities as per expectations laid out by the government.... Your child’s teacher will connect daily either using google meet, email or phone call. This is to ensure your child and you are supported during this time. Your child’s teacher will communicate through email on scheduled google meets. If technology is not available, the teacher will call or email you. Assessment will continue during this week with the expectation that assignments are completed and handed in. Extra support will be available through Panda Pals (additional support) which is a google meet that will be open from 9:00 12:00 and from 1:00 to 3:00 Monday to Friday. More detailed information that is specific to your child will be sent to you via your child’s homeroom teacher. As always, WHPS staff is committed to supporting your child’s learning. With winter already here, this is a friendly reminder to have your child dressed in proper winter attire: a good winter jacket, a toque, mitts or gloves and winter boots are the essentials. Additional items like snow pants and a neck warmer/buff are also good to have. Sledding, skiing and snowshoeing will start soon and being warm makes the experience of going outside much more enjoyable.

Alberta Education announced that K-12 students will move to at-home learning for the week of January 4-8, 2021 and will resume in-person learning on January 11.... During this first week back, school offices will remain open and administration will be available should you have any questions. Student learning will continue during this time and your child’s teacher would have been in contact with you regarding curriculum delivery and content. See more

Friday’s Professional Learning Day with Ulana Soletsky weaved Conceptual Understanding in Math. Grade groups engaged with Ulana to develop math activities.

Bullying Awareness Week is November 16 to 20, 2020. It is a time to promote awareness and understanding of bullying and its impacts. Bullying is a relationship ...problem that involves a power imbalance, which is why it can be so challenging to overcome it by ourselves. Regardless of where bullying happens in school, the office, at home or in the community there are people and resources that can help. This year’s theme, #WhereToTurn, encourages everyone to learn where to turn when dealing with bullying. Here are a few ways you can take part in Bullying Awareness Week: - share bullying prevention resources on social media - the Bullying Helpline (1-888-456-2323) is available 24/7 in over 170 languages - start a discussion with your friends, family or coworkers about how to intervene - write a letter or email to the editor of your local newspaper or radio station about the importance of promoting healthy relationships

Friday Fun in the Snow

Creating art work is SOOO much FUN!

Yesterday and today grade 3 students took part in a virtual presentation by the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village entitled Risdvo. They learned about the culture and traditions that pioneers brought with them part of the social studies program of studies. They had an opportunity to ask questions and make a kolach ornament. Thanks to the Fundraising Committee for covering the costs. It was a huge success!

What a HIT! Thanks 49 St. Grill for the spaghetti and meat sauce. Comments from our students - "Thanks for making the spaghetti. I loved it. It really made my day great. I love this spaghetti." Tomorrow students in kindergarten and grade 1 will be served. Remember no ordering is necessary but bring some snacks.

Guess what? You don’t have to pack lunch tonight, just snacks. Tomorrow students in grade 3 and kindergarten are first in line for whole wheat spaghetti and meat sauce made by 49 St Grill. Can’t wait!!!

This week, Aspen View's online Kindergarten class connected our past and our present and learned about what the poppy represents. Rich learning happens at home ...when families and teachers work together. Kindergarten students in Athabasca, Boyle, Smith, Smoky Lake and Thorhild took time to discuss and REMEMBER. Professional learning yesterday focused on First Aid Training and reviewing our literacy plan and building on our numeracy initiative. One great suggestion - add numbers to your every day communication. For example instead of asking your child to get on his or her boots add the quantity. So get your two boots or get your one hat. Simply adding quantity will help to develop skills.

Huge thanks to UFA for the donation of $500, $1000 from BuyLow and $1500 from TC Energy. Our students benefit every day from breakfast snacks and milk!!!

On World Teacher Day it is an honor to recognize the teachers in my life, past and present, and in particular the teachers in Aspen View Public Schools. I am in...credibly proud of the work that Aspen View teachers do in their schools and their communities to inspire young people and shape the future. My goal continues to be to provide the supports to enable students and teachers to excel. I also want to recognize the supporting cast in Aspen View that allows teachers and students to achieve. This includes support staff, division office staff, custodians, bus drivers, student services consultants, maintenance and technology staff. The support they provide is essential, valued and appreciated. I encourage each of you, on World Teacher Day, to reflect on those teachers who influenced you, or teachers who you know are making a difference in the lives of children today. Reach out to them with a word of thanks or gratitude. Not only will it make their day, but spreading positivity enriches our own lives. Tomorrow is a BIG Day! It is your chance to support and enhance programming at WHPS by becoming part of the Fundraising Committee and/or the School Council. These groups meet once a month to work with administration on how to spend fundraised dollars and make things better at the school. Commitment is 45 minutes for Fundraising and 1.5 hours for School Council. We are a happy, committed group that focuses on what is best for children. 4:30 for Fundraising and 5:30 for School Council.
