MAKING CAMP- MANITOULIN ISLAND, GEORGIAN BAY. Another painting by William Armstrong done while visiting the Little Current area in the late 1860s. This is possi...bly on the west side of Low Island looking toward the LaCloche mountains. I like the attention to detail like the seagulls following the small sailboat ( a Mackinaw??) coming in from fishing the Wabano Channel. Note- the structure on the left is a ‘wigwam’ while the conical one in the center is a ‘teepee’. ( if the teepee had a smoke flap at the top it would then be a ‘tipi’. google See more

READYING THE CANOES- for Kaylee A beautiful painting by Armstrong of people preparing their canoes for an adventure. The scene is near Birch Island with Dreamers Rock on the right. A favourite site for gatherings, POW-wows, etc. A great attraction to the present day.

It’s International Mountain Day! Did you know that Ontario is home to an ancient mountain range that was once as large as the Himalayas? Killarney Provincial P...ark is at the northern edge of a huge mountain belt (Grenville orogen) that once stretched from Texas through Georgian Bay to Labrador. Rocks caught between two colliding continents were squeezed and thrust together, deforming the rocks and metamorphosing them to various degrees. Eons of erosion have worn down these mountains, which now comprise the Canadian Shield in the Muskokas, Algonquin Park and beneath the Paleozoic rocks of southern Ontario. : Killarney Provincial Park

This sketch from Christina Jones is of the big storage buildings that were the Spanish Lumber camps . One of the buildings stored all the dry goods for the men in the lumber camps the other stored all the hay and oats for the logging horses. The little valley in the background is the trail going over the mountain were you go up to lake Topaz and the mountain to the right was always called look out three as it was used as a fire look out because of its large view of the area.
