Great Powerful Monday Morning!!! This is How She Does It is back, a weekly post about how I go about keeping my place clean when I am not cleaning yours. This week we’re talking about Cleaning the Washing Machine!... Now, I know that I have told you how to keep your washer from being smelly - keep the lid or door open as often as possible. This lack of smelliness only decreases how often you should clean your washing machine, but it still needs to be done on a yearly basis at least. More often if you live in a multi person home or have pets with hair that they love to spread around the house. First things first; start with an empty washing machine. For a front load, this is going to be a single cycle. Sorry top loaders, this is going to take a while. FRONT LOAD WASHER Before you get all crazy, clean the gasket at the front of the washer to remove excess hair, water, scum and mildew. This is easily done with vinegar and a damp cloth. Set the washer for the largest load and hottest ware, then pour 2 cups of vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drum and run the cycle. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth when it’s finished. TOP LOAD WASHER Set the washer to the largest load and hottest water. Spray the dispensers with vinegar and, with a toothbrush, clear them of gunk, hair, and dirt. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth. Pour 4 cups of vinegar into the drum and start the cycle. Once the water had been added, pause the cycle and let it sit for an hour. After an hour, resume the cycle. Once finished, add 1 cup of baking soda and run another cycle. Afterwards wipe the top of the drum dry to prevent mildew. Now sit down and relax knowing that there is no way your spouse, roommate or mom can find fault in how you did your chores.
