The black-throated bushtit is a ridiculously cute little songbird from deep woods in the Himalayas and a few other places in southeast Asia. They are very social, very vocal, and very hungry! They forage constantly for insects, spiders, seeds, and berries. Their overall fluffiness and tiny size combined with their inquisitive nature makes them almost unbearably adorable. Most people are not equipped to be able to handle this level of cuteness.
White-eared hummingbirds are beautiful and very feisty little birds from Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, and the southwestern United States. The edges of pine and oak forest with an abundance of penstemons and salvias is their usual habitat but they also show up regularly in well planted gardens. Both the male and the female bear the distinctive white stripe that gives them their common name. (*Hummingbird feeders make excellent Christmas gifts for that hard-to-shop-for person on your list. Feel free to stop by and we can help you pick one out!)
Long-time rivals Nancy and Noreen are horrified to arrive at a charity event and realize they are both wearing the same outfit.
Sphinx moths are also known as hawkmoths and hummingbird moths. There are a great many species and they hover at flowers and feed on nectar exactly as hummingbirds do. They are so frequently mistaken for hummingbirds (especially when seen from a distance) that Roger Tory Peterson even illustrated them in his field guide to western birds! Starting out life as big, scary-looking caterpillars called hornworms, sphinx moths are important pollinators and should be welcomed to our gardens! They are attracted to a great diversity of flowering plants but are especially fond of fireweed, evening primrose, lilacs, stocks, columbines, penstemons, bee balm, heliotrope, verbena, and phlox.
Black storks are tall, shy birds found throughout Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. Uncommon and graceful, they are usually solitary but sometimes found in pairs. They spend their days patrolling wetlands and slow-moving rivers, feeding mostly on small fish but they will also take frogs, snakes, lizards, crabs, small birds, mice, snails, and large insects. Black storks have proven somewhat difficult to study as they are quite shy and have a strong preference to avoid the presence of humans.
We are always looking for more environmentally responsible ways to go about our lives and we are very pleased with this new, eco-friendly laundry detergent that has just arrived at our store! Lots of people are Christmas shopping already and this might be a good stocking stuffer idea!
Found across Europe and northern Asia, Cetti’s warbler isn’t flashy and is far more often heard than seen. An insect-eater that mostly forages around lakes, ponds, and rivers, these little birds are loved for their beautiful song and are also well known for laying very unusual brick-red eggs.
We know everyone is going to be very busy today watching the new season of 'The Crown' on Netflix so to help get you in the mood for royalty, here's the fabulous crowned pigeon!
