Almost time to dig up the dahlias and tuck them in for the winter

Wildbee 27.12.2020

Who knew dahlias are genetically diverse? Just beginning in flower farming I found myself this year standing in my dahlia rows, confused. I was sure I had organized all my varieties last fall. The café au lait dahlias were a favorite of mine and I was careful to plant them specifically in their own area. Summer came and I was looking at row with slight variations of colour. I checked my plans and notes and knew that I had planted all the same variety. I came to learn that da...hlias can be genetically diverse, carrying 8 chromosomes instead of 2. This is where the variation in colour can happen in a single variety. Dahlias can also change colour throughout the growing season, showing cooler or warmer tones on the same plant. I wasn’t sad with the results and loved all the slight variations that were produced in this beautiful giant bloom! All the pictures below are the same variety!
