You wouldn't eat spoiled food from your fridge, why would you give your birds bad seed? When the weather is wet or especially humid, seed can spoil and cause your backyard neighbours to get sick. And as we well know in the Lower Mainland, our winter is rarely anything but WET. So here are a few tips on how to store your bird feed to keep your feathered friends happy and healthy all season long:... Always store your seed in a cool and dry location Never mix old seed with any new seed During the winter, store only the amount of seed that your birds can consume over a four-week period (and be sure to completely use your winter supply of birdseed before warm weather arrives) Keep your bird feeders filled with a one or two-day supply of seed to make sure it's eaten quickly and stays fresh. Discard any moldy, rancid or foul-smelling seed (this can all be a health hazard to birds!)

Low temperatures call for high fats. High-fat foods are crucial for your backyard birds at this time of year: They're the most concentrated energy source that a bird can consume... Stored body fat is a bird's primary energy supply between meals, through winter nights and during migration First thing in the morning and just before dusk is when birds most need to stoke their internal heater with fat Songbirds may use up to 3/4 of their fat reserves during one winter night! Birds can entirely replenish lost fat reserves during the next day when high-fat food is available Add suet, peanuts and black oil sunflower seeds to your backyard feeders to help keep your birds healthy and happy through the winter.
With the winter feeding frenzy about to start, now is the perfect time to make sure you have the three Cs of winter bird feeding sorted! CoveredSheltaring your feeder helps keep seed protected from rain or snow, and help prevent mold from growing CapacityMore birds frequenting your feeder might call for a larger capacity feeder to keep you from making multiple trips out for refills... CleanlinessCleaning your feeder regularly helps minimize mold, mildew and other unhealthy conditions that can cause disease among backyard birds Take a peek at how birders in snowy Ontario are feeding their backyard neighbours this season: https://bit.ly/3ehySbL
