Moody and evocative . Long time collaborator and friend @knightstudios approached me to create a movie poster for his latest short film, Olive . Ray is an exceptional director who knows how to bring a diverse creative group together to make magic happen on and off screen using the resources he has in his immediate surroundings... . For this latest flick Ray asked for something minimal and atmospheric, alluding gently and with curiosity to the subject of this simply named film. Got one! . Matt of West Coast Fishing Expeditions called me up to create a one of a kind hand illustrated piece that he could apply to the yearly keepsake apparel he offers to his fishing guests . His cheeky ‘Fish Must Die’ slogan may take some viewers by shock but what Matt doesn’t advertise is how much information he and other recreational fishers offer back to the government ocean stock assessment group about their fishing trips so that the government can monitor fish ca...tch in the area to update fishing guidelines and keep this method of collecting food from the ocean sustainable . Coming from a coastal family who have a history of working as commercial fishers, running a Marian and preforming salmonid enhancement activities, the health of ocean inhabitants is a subject near and dear to my heart . We were taught that we cannot only take from the ocean, we must give back and protect its inhabitants as well . With this in mind I decided to jump on an opportunity to work as a Creel Observer this summer where I get to witness first hand what comes in from the ocean and take records that will eventually go up the chain to the people who decide what we can and cannot fish and how much . This project was extra special because while I was immersed in the creative process I also got to witness multiple industries working together with the same goal, to keep doing what we love, sustainably . Is there anything more magical than coming across a Japanese fishing float that has washed up on the beach? . That was the inspiration for the latest identity design I created for Shanti of Big Beach Bookkeeping . This was a tricky one to design. Creating the illusion of transparent glass in a 2D vector illustration program made my brain hurt but we finally got there... . Shanti will be launching her business to support local small businesses in the Tofino/Ucluelet area so give her a shout if you are in need of getting your bookkeeping affairs in order (isn’t that the always the last thing on our agenda!?) . As a biologist, team leader of @raincoasted and Mom I think she pegged it just right when she said she wanted an identity that felt organized but not too ‘bookkeepery’ while still paying homage to her background in marine sciences because Shanti rocks all of those things and more! . Got to pull out the pens and pencils for this one . I worked with fellow collaborator @lhemingway to hand illustrate her business manifesto and design it in a poster format . The piece was eventually gifted to all of her collaborators @backyardcreative to hang in their work spaces... . We connected with Mauro @uffserigrafia to have these beauties hand screen printed in his Nanaimo studio instead of using the more typical digital printing approach . This hand rendered and printed approach leaves you with a much more rich, timeless and and intentional feeling piece, just like the group of Vancouver Island creatives it was created for . It was so cool to utilize Mauros insane talent on this project. He’s been screenpeinting for over 16 years on all mediums but paper is close to his heart, as it is ours . I urge you to check out these talented creators who live and work on Vancouver Island and do so much to put energy and life back into the creative community here .
