The well named Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) looks like an owl, but behaves like a hawk by hunting for small mammals by daylight. These birds have wicked eye-sight and hearing they can spot prey up to half a mile away, and can detect prey a foot under snow! To see these beautiful birds, one would have to travel to the frigid north as this solitary bird sticks to Northern boreal forests year round. #wildlifewednesday #wildwednesday

Mute Swans (Cygnus olor) are not native to North America - they were brought from Europe in the mid 1800s to decorate ponds and city parks. Their aggressive behaviour and voracious appetites often disturb local ecosystems, displace native species, and even pose a hazard to humans. Nonetheless, these beautiful and elegant birds have become a symbol of love due to their monogamous nature. Mute Swans form long-lasting pair bonds, and they will typically only remate if their partner dies. #wildlifewednesday #wildwednesday

Help migrating birds by keeping your feeders up! Feeders provide migrating birds an important and reliable source of energy along their journey. Consider keeping your feeder up during the late autumn and early winter, including your hummingbird feeder if you have one, so late-to-migrate birds can indulge in a much-needed rest stop. Birds use the stars to navigate during migration. Unfortunately, they are also attracted to city lights. This poses many hazards for birds who may fly into glass windows and injure themselves. You can help by putting up window decals, blinds, and other deterrents. Another simple way to prevent bird-window collisions is to turn your lights off at night or at least dim them significantly especially if you live in a high rise. You will save on your hydro bill and help birds n...avigate their way at night! #MigratoryMonday

Bats have a bad rap. After bats were witnessed drinking horse blood, the idea of blood-sucking bats entered popular culture. Yet, out of the 1,300 species of bats, only 3 actually drink blood! And when they do, they're gentle about it - producing a natural anesthetic in their spit making their bite less painful. Happy International Bat Week!... #batweek #internationalbatweek
