WildSafeBC Fraser Valley 15.11.2020

Hey, Fraser Valley! The FVRD program is heading into hibernation. During our program hibernation, wildlife conflicts can still be reported to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 and urgent wildlife questions can be directed to [email protected]. Until our program resumes in the spring, please visit wildsafebc.com and follow our Facebook page for updates, tips, and other information to assist you in keeping wildlife wild and communities safe! Please view our year-end report on our... website to see what your FVRD WildSafeBC Community Coordinator was able to accomplish this year. As your Community Coordinator, I'm very grateful for the generous support of the British Columbia Conservation Foundation, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, the Conservation Officer Service and Bylaw Enforcement for their ongoing support, and everyone in the FVRD who has made an effort to prevent human-wildlife conflicts in 2019. Additional thanks to the staff at the Fraser Valley Regional District office, and to municipal sponsors with the City of Abbotsford, the City of Chilliwack, the Village of Harrison Hot Springs, the District of Hope, and the District of Mission. A very big WildSafeBC "THANK YOU!" for an excellent 2019 season!

In this #SaturdaySpotlight we highlight the efforts of residents in 100 Mile House and Williams Lake that reduce the chances of attracting bears to their proper...ty by keeping their garbage bins clean and smell-free. These families in the Cariboo Regional District provide a great example of how to #keepwildlifewild and communities safe. See more

WildSafeBC wishes everyone a Safe and Happy Halloween. Please remember that bears are still active in many communities in BC. Do not invite them to your doorstep by leaving pumpkins out at night unattended. Remember to dispose of your discarded pumpkin responsibly by using local compost facilities if available. Do not place pumpkins by roadsides! This can attract wildlife such as bears, deer and raccoons that might get hit by vehicles. Thanks for helping to keep #wildlifewild and your community safe.

Well the pandemic didn't slow down the number of great entries that we had for our Wildlife Photography competition. We can only show a small sampling of the su...bmissions in this week's #WildWednesday, but we were blown away by the quality and variety of photos received. How many of the species portrayed can you name? See more

This #WildWednesday, we're talking about the bighorn sheep rut, which occurs from about mid-October to mid-November. During this time they are fun to watch as t...hey are congregated in large groups. It is also very important for photographers and wildlife watchers to give the sheep plenty of space and to try to minimize their interaction with the sheep at this time. Responsible watching includes allowing the sheep to move away without being pursued in an attempt to get "that perfect shot." See more

By observing how wildlife behaves we can learn how to stay safe ourselves when out in nature. #WildWednesday

This week's #SaturdaySpotlight we'd like to recognize a couple of our WildSafe Rangers. These two young boys have picked up garbage that a bear had scattered around Kimberley. Thank you both for your hard work in showing how we can all do our part to help keep wildlife wild.
