For those of you who purchased Mountain Mint this spring, I hope you have been enjoying this refreshing mint in your summer drinks. It is also a wonderful pollinator plant and if you let a few stems go to flower the pollinators will thank you! Then come fall, you can cut down to about 4, dry the stems and enjoy the dry leaves as a refreshing tea all winter... what a wonderful plant!!
The front space of Wild Side Gardens... bright happy space to host a meeting or rent an office for short or long term...
How is everyones garden doing? Successes?? Challenges ??
Its Japanese Beetle season! Watch your plants. They especially love roses and grape... I get a bowl with soapy water, hold it under where they are, tap the branch/leaf and they fall in. This way Im not killing any other beneficial insects with insecticidaI spray... I leave the bowl outside and handy as youll likely need to check daily while they are in season.
Ha ha - so true - can anyone relate??
Took me a minute to realize what this was
Pick a tree, preferably one on your property or near where you live and stretch out underneath looking up through the branches... have you done this since you were a kid? Spend a few minutes relaxing into the ground breathing deeply. Listen to the sounds around you - feel the breeze and watch the leaves dance. Then thank the tree for all it offers - shade on a hot day, homes for the birds and squirrels and oxygen to breathe. Chances are you might make this a new habit:)
Love this quote!
One reason to resist the urge to clean up spent blooms: birds may like the seeds. Here is a nesting pair of goldfinch enjoying the seeds from wild columbine and lance leaf coreopsis. The whole family had a chance to watch these two, including when he fed her!
Coffee Club is back! Coffee roasted fresh weekly for pick-up on Friday/Saturdays. Im curbside today until 12ish or by appointment. Our beautiful new teatowels from Quebec will brighten up your kitchen! A few plants left - get them while they last:)
Growing tomatoes? Here are a couple of tips and tricks to help your tomatoes be their best.... Number 1: Make sure your tomatoes have lots of room to breathe... good air circulation is important to keep your tomatoes "fungal" free. T... Number 2: Once your tomatoes are established, trim off the bottom "weedy" branches to promote air circulation and keep leaves off the ground. Number 3: Pinch out any new leafs in the crotch of branches as they sprout out. This keeps growth going towards the fruit. This weekly "check-in" allows you to say "hi" to your plants and keep an eye out for any unwanted pests. Number 4: Water carefully. Try not to have dirty water splash up on the vegetation if possible - this is how many soil borne tomato diseases get a foothold. Also try to water first thing in the morning so any water on the plants has a chance to evaporate before night. Lastly... plant some friends! Tomotoes and basil have a love affair and each will support the other in taste and pest control. Mint and Bee balm are also great companion plants for tomatoes. Enjoy! Nothing tastes better than home grown tomatoes!!
I love this time of day in the garden when the shadows get long... wandering, connecting, relaxing and shaking off the day...
