Wilfrid Laurier Karate Club 17.11.2020

Hey everyone! We are currently in communication with the Laurier Athletics Complex to finalize our Fall schedule. We will be posting as soon as we get it. This semester the focus will be heavily on strong kihon to support kata and kumite. It takes many reps for your body to correctly internalize kihon and distancing. Remember someone who can finish you with a single oi zuki or a single gyaku zuki for that matter is a great karateka!

Karate ni sente nashi - It means there is no first strike in karate. A deeper context would mean do not go looking to pick fights with people just because you train in a martial art, you're a bodybuilder or you are in the military etc. We should all be inwardly humble and outwardly gentle as much as we can in our daily actions. When you behave violently for petty reasons, you become predictable and a skilled enemy will exploit that attribute. All that said, when you have don...e everything you can to deescalate a potentially violent confrontation and you are in a life-death scenario, you must fire your strikes on full throttle. The idea is to be humble and encourage your enemy's arrogance....but strike him like a lightning bolt in a split second of surprise and self-defense. Ideally, Shotokan Karate dictates downing your opponent in one blow. This level is only achieved from years of countless repetitions in kihon, kata and kumite training as well as the makiwara. This is the way of Traditional Karate-do. See more
