Wilfrid Laurier University student Kristin Cobbett’s extracurricular activities are quite literally out of this world. "I’d love to be the first person not just woman on Mars, as it is the closest celestial candidate that could harbour life." Kristin, a Laurier Chemistry-Biochemistry student, is one of 13 undergraduate students from around the world accepted into the 2020 Advanced Academy Program at Project Possum, an immersive, experiential learning opportunity for und...ergraduate students interested in upper-atmospheric research, bioastronautics, science communication and human space flight operations. "It was Professor Haranas who encouraged me to apply to Project PoSSUM, says Cobbett. From the first time we talked during office hours, he has motivated me to reach for the stars and forget my backup plan. I feel like he sees my potential and that has made an impact on me. If Homecoming 2020 proved one thing, it’s that even a pandemic can’t change how great it is to be a Laurier Golden Hawk. Laurier Alumni, students, staff, faculty and friends proved once and for all that Laurier spirit isn’t confined to the university’s campuses, a stadium, or a court during virtual 2020 Homecoming celebrations, which took place from Sept. 24 to 27. Laurie Sadowski is a proud alumna of Laurier Music's master’s in Community Music program. "For my capstone research project, I reached out to my local hospital, Niagara Health in St. Catharines, Ont., to see if I could create a music and wellness program in their outpatient oncology department. I worked hard to develop the program from scratch and completed two studies about its impact on participants. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. ... Participants said it got them out of the house, allowed them to be more social and took their minds off of their treatment. The program continued to grow, and I was eventually hired in a permanent capacity as the hospital’s Arts in Medicine Coordinator." It is Laurier’s northern-most research station and this year marks its 30th anniversary. Now the longest-running hydrologically focused Arctic research station in Canada, Trail Valley Creek has become a productive field site for Laurier’s Centre for Cold Regions and Water Science, which maintains more than 50 research... sites north of Ontario’s Ring of Fire. Students heading home for the holidays? Brant County Health Unit has these tips to plan ahead. Students living away from home should consider doing a self-quarantine or drastically reducing close contact with others for 10 to 14 days BEFORE returning home. This will help lower the risk of exposure to COVID-19. Those unable to quarantine should limit close contact with others, especially seniors and individuals who are immuno-compromised or have underlying medical conditio...ns. Students heading home should avoid social gatherings with friends or others who may also be returning from post-secondary institutions. Students should have close contact with those in their household only. Students are encouraged to isolate themselves immediately and seek assessment and testing at a local assessment centre if they are experiencing symptoms (even mild ones) It’s important to remember just because you know someone, it does not reduce the risk of transmitting COVID-19. And it is possible to transmit COVID-19 even if you aren't showing symptoms. International students who travel home will need to quarantine and follow other institutional protocols upon their return to Canada. For more information and COVID-19 updates, visit wlu.ca/coronavirus or bchu.org/coronavirus

Our third Laurier Milton Lecture is happening TODAY. It will be led by Roger Sarty, PhD who will discuss how the Canadian Army saved Halifax after the 1917 Explosion. When Halifax was devastated by the explosion of a munitions ship on Dec. 6, 1917, it was the Canadian Army garrison of this fortress city that came to the rescue. Yet this often heroic effort has received little recognition. Indeed, the garrison commander was fired for what the authorities in Ottawa thought were his excessive demands to help the stricken civilian population. To register here: beinspired.ca/lmls
