Filing deadline: April 30, 2019 Most Canadian income tax and benefit returns for 2018 are due on April 30, 2019. For those who are self-employed, or who have a spouse or common-law partner who is self-employed, the deadline to file your tax return is June 15, 2019. Since June 15, 2019 is a Saturday, we will consider that you filed your return on time if we receive it, or it is postmarked, no later than June 17, 2019. However, if you have a balance owing, you must pay it by April 30, 2019.

While taxpayers fall victim to tax scams year-round, such scams are more prevalent during and just following tax filing season. During that time, taxpayers expect to hear from the tax authorities, and so are perhaps less likely to question the validity of phone calls or e-mails which purport to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). With that in mind, the CRA has issued a reminder to taxpayers of the need to be aware of the possibility of falling victim to a tax scam. The CRAs warning, which can be found on its website at https://www.canada.ca//security/protect-yourself-against-f, outlines the ways in which the CRA does and does not communicate with taxpayers and the warning signs which should alert taxpayers that a communication received is not in fact from the CRA.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced the interest rates which will apply to amounts owed to and by the Agency for 2017, as well as the rates that will apply for the purpose of calculating employee and shareholder taxable benefits. The lower of the two credit rates shown is paid on corporate tax overpayments. Employees who work in the retail sector frequently receive a discount when purchasing goods sold by their employer. Recent press reports have indicated that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) had or would be changing its assessing policy to require such discounts to be treated as a taxable employment benefit. In response, the Minister of National Revenue indicated that no change in the law governing the tax treatment of such discounts has been made, and that the CRA would be reviewing the wording of its recent publications in that area. No further announcement has been issued to date.
