If you take medication regularly, it may be difficult to resist a drink at your holiday parties but consider this: Drinking alcohol may lead to decreased intellectual faculties, slowing of reflexes, poor coordination, and drowsiness. As a result, it should not be mixed with medication that has a similar impact on the brain. The cumulative effects of both substances may lead to accidents or falls. Seniors, especially, should be mindful of those risks. When paired with alcohol..., certain medications can be harmful to the liver, even at regular doses. An example of this is acetaminophen, a common over-the-counter medication used to treat fever and pain. You should consult a pharmacist on the compatibility between your medication and alcohol and refrain from drinking until then. Stay safe, everybody!

Which beverage should you pair with your meals? To quench your thirst, Canada’s Food Guide recommends you drink water rather than sugary beverages like fruit juice (even those without added sugar), soft drinks, flavoured plant-based beverages or milk, energy drinks, or sweetened and flavoured water. These beverages contain a lot of sugar, and sometimes even fats, both of which are often already present in our diet in excessive quantities. It’s not about demonizing milk or fruit juice; rather, it’s about drinking them in moderation. You can still enjoy a glass of juice or milk at breakfast, for example, but when you’re thirsty during the day, water should be your go-to beverage.

The holiday season has arrived! Quick reminder from our pharmacists that the food you consume may have effects on your medication. When your pharmacist gives you specific instructions regarding food, be sure to follow them! Otherwise, your treatment may not be fully effective or may even lead to side effects that could have been avoided.

Travelling with diabetes (or any other medical conditions) can sometimes be difficult. Today, we're sharing some of our most valuable pre-travel tips: 1. It’s best to book an appointment with your doctor a few weeks before you leave, to make sure your health is stable. If need be, he or she can also sign a letter authorizing you to travel with your medication and supplies (needles, syringes, insulin, lancing device, lancets, etc.). 2. It’s also important to check that your im...munizations are up to date and, depending on your destination, to inquire whether you will need any specific vaccinations or preventive treatment. 3. If you need a vaccine, book an appointment at a travel health clinic asap. We recommend checking out TravelRx Vancouver for all of your travel-related vaccination needs.

Making positive food choices can have a positive effect on Type 2 Diabetes, here are our favourite tips: - Cook your own meals and choose fibre-rich foods (vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals). - Consult Canada’s Food Guide for recommended serving sizes. - Between meals, opt for healthy snacks (fruits, vegetables, nuts) rather than processed foods (pastries, bars, chips).... - Drink water instead of juice or pop. Alcohol contains a lot of sugar. It can be difficult to make the right food choices. For more help, consult our team to be paired with a registered dietician, who can help you draw up a food plan tailored to your tastes, allergies, intolerances, and needs.

Do you know how to choose the right glucose meter? Keep these factors in mind: Device and display size: There are different size devices on the market. If you have dexterity problems (caused by arthritis, for example), ask to hold the device to see whether you are comfortable handling it. If you have vision problems, it’s also a good idea to check the display, font size, and screen brightness. Test strips and lancets: Make sure you have no trouble handling them, e.g., takin...g them out of the package or applying a drop of blood to the strip. Ease of use: Is the device simple to calibrate? Is it easy to find past readings? Syncing with electronic devices (tablet, cellphone): It is now possible to sync your blood sugar readings with an electronic device. Device memory: If you opt for a glucose meter that does not sync with electronic devices, make sure the memory can contain enough readings for your needs. Batteries: Are they easy to find and replace?
