CAOAC would like to offer sincere condolences on the passing of long-time DRAS and CAOAC member Barry McKee. He was a prolific fish breeder having bred more th...an 240 species of fish. He received many awards through CAOAC including the Author Award. He was always trying to improve the hobby and was a great help behind the scenes. Our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends. Brochis splendens "Rio Negro Via #Manaus we have been able to import splendid #Brochis #splendens. The #Greeen #Cat comes from a huge area, from Peru to the Pan...tanal in Brazil; based on the experience with other Corydoras it is more than likely that there are several species hiding behind the name "Brochis splendens". But such things should be subject of a scientific revision and not the speculation of hobbyists. One should only be aware that it makes little sense to assemble a breeding group from different imports from different countries of origin. Possibly one of the most popular L-Numbers of all times: L 25. Described as Pseudacanthicus pirarara back in 2016 by Chamon & Sousa it was soon back on the list...s after it was not possible to legally obtain it for a while, thanks to the so called positive list. It has been bred a few times now and can actually always be found on lists and in shops. But it's a different thing to catch them yourself, it's much better and way more fun. The shown juvenile specimen was collected 20 km north of São Felix (Rio Xingu, Brazil), and was one of a few specimens we collected back in 2014 during an expedition for the ichthyological collection of the UFPA in Altamira. The stone you can see on the photograph is actually of exactly the same type this specimen was collected on. See more

Heros sp. Manacapuru #Manacapuru is the third largest city in the state of #Amazonas in #Brazil. It is located about 80 km west of Manaus at the confluence of t...he Rio Manacapuru and the Amazon. A large, lake-like extension of the Rio Manacapuru near the city is called Lago Cabaliana. From the surroundings of Manacapuru, especially the red-backed angelfish have become famous. But there are also wonderful local forms of other cichlids. One of them is the #Heros sp. Manacapuru. "Technically" the species belongs most likely to H. #efasciatus, but as the fine systematics of this cichlid species is not really understood, it seems more reasonable at present to use the locality name instead of an uncertain species name. #aquarium #freshwater fish #ornamental fish Photos & Text Frank Schäfer ><(((((> <)))))>< ><(((((> <)))))><

Corydoras burgessi Now the season for the very beautiful and much beloved orange blotch corys has started. There does exist a good number of different species a...nd varieties, all have in common a brightly shining spot on the neck. Depending on light this glows from yellow to almost red. This glowing spot helps the fish in the black waters of their homeland to stay together in a school. In the past years it was often difficult for us to obtain #Corydoras #burgessi. Most often varieties reached us, for example spotted ones that were not as popular as the plain varieties among many of our customers. But now - finally - the pure stuff is available again! #aquarium #freshwater fish #ornamental fish Photos & Text Frank Schäfer ><(((((> <)))))>< ><(((((>

Finally India again! It is still a tricky business to import ornamental fish because of the corona-related strongly restricted air traffic. At first, Singapore,... Thailand, Indonesia and Israel reached us again, followed by South America with Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela, and recently, Nigeria, an African import. And now we have finally been able to realize the first bigger India import since the lockdown, with beautiful barbels, labyrinths, badids, loaches, spiny eels etc. As a representative we show here freshly arrived Striped Gourami (Colisa bejeus, on stocklist C. fasciata 411204), which have put the flight away easily and are already back in full color. #aquarium #freshwater fish #ornamental fish Photos & Text Frank Schäfer ><(((((> <)))))>< ><(((((> <)))))><

Eastern hellbenders from North Western PA. I believe the first set of images to be of a female following the scent of a milt oozing male upstream. Its my hope t...hat she found him and they've started working on producing the next generation of these incredible animals in this amazing creek. We had the honor of observing 7 of them in about 2 hours in less than a 100 yards of stream. See more

Killi fishes are surprisingly found in small puddles in the forest, sometimes far from the rivers. These fish are able, on land, to jump far and in the desired ...direction. Without obvious anatomical modifications, they produce a coordinated and effective tail-flip jumping behavior, wherein lateral flexion of the axial body into a C-shape, followed by contralateral flexion of the body axis, propels the fish into a ballistic flight-path that covers a distance of multiple body lengths (1). Interestingly, this skill seems to increase with ages ages (2) or after training (3). (2013). NEW STUDY: Evidence of interspecific chromosomal diversification in rainbowfishes More than 100 species of rainbowfish are recognised across Australia and New G...uinea. In this study, Zuzana Majtánová and colleagues examined the chromosomal characteristics of five rainbowfish species, representing all major lineages. While all five rainbowfish species had the same number of diploid chromosomes (2n = 48), their karyotypes were shown to differ from each other. The authors conclude: "Despite the conservatism in chromosome number, cytogenetic differences in the topology of chromosome markers were found among different genera. The observed differences correlate with the degree of species divergence and might be associated with chromosomal rearrangements, known to play a fundamental role in speciation." Copella meinkeni These beautiful #tetras were called #Copella #nattereri in literature for many years until a scientific study found that C. nattereri is in fac...t the species previously known as C. nigrofasciata and that the "C. nattereri" from the #Orinoco and #Rio #Negro belong to a scientifically unnamed species called Copella meinkeni. We regularly offer this attractive species (further information here: https://www.aquariumglaser.de//fish-a/copella_meinkeni_en/). We have just received a pretty import of the species from #Venezuela. The animals of this local variety have especially nice red spots. #aquarium #freshwater fish #ornamental fish Photos & Text Frank Schäfer ><(((((> <)))))>< ><(((((> <)))))><
