When I read that the family who owns this restaurant were opening their doors to the lonely, elderly and homeless for meals and companionship on Christmas Day, ...I phoned them to see if I could help. They said "One hand can't clap alone so yes, we would love volunteers." When I arrived at the restaurant, there were only a couple of people eating. The owners said that not many people had come and they had prepared food for hundreds of people. I googled and phoned Hiatus House, a safe shelter for women and children escaping violence in the home. They were thrilled at the prospect of food. So we filled up my car with soup, fried chicken, fries, and cupcakes and off I went. Next call was the Downtown Mission and they also were happy to accept a car full of food. Not sure where to look for hungry people next, I took a chance and drove to the hotel where I met so many refugees last year. As luck would have it, some families had just arrived from the airport and were very exhausted, nervous and hungry. So I called the owners of Marina's and they started packing up another load. I drove to the restaurant, filled my car once more and headed back to the hotel. I carried the trays of chicken and fries,packages of soup, and an enormous box of cupcakes up to the rooms and the children were so excited. The mothers were a little taken aback but smiling as they watched their children. From war, to camps, to Canada where some crazy blonde woman comes barging in with steaming hot food and cake.....hahaha..... no wonder they were taken aback. I drove back to the restaurant to thank them for being such wonderful people. Christmas Day was their first day in business. Please support them by ordering food or visiting the restaurant for lunch or dinner. The owners packed up dinner and cake for me to bring home to Steve and it was delicious!
