Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) Portal Now Open Canadian businesses, non-profit organizations, or charities who have seen a drop in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for a subsidy to cover part of their commercial rent or property expenses, starting on September 27, 2020, until June 2021. This subsidy will provide payments directly to qualifying renters and property owners, without requiring the participation of landlords.... The portal for the new rent program is officially live, you can access it through your CRA My Business Account, or Represent a Client. The Government of Canada also released a CERS subsidy calculator. Important notes: You can apply today for rent covering September 27 to October 24, 2020. Applications will be processed on November 30 and funds will flow for this period as of December 4. Applications for the second CERS period (October 25 to November 21, 2020) will open on November 30. No details as to when funds will flow. You can include rent and other eligible amounts already paid in respect of a claim period as well as amounts that are payable for the claim period when submitting their CERS applications. Amounts that are not paid at the time of the application will have to be paid no later than 60 days after payment of the subsidy. If you are eligible for the base subsidy, you may also be eligible for lockdown support if your business location is significantly affected by a public health order for a week or more.

October 9, 2020 (OTTAWA) Today, Tony Elenis President and CEO of the Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association (ORHMA) released the following statement in response to the Government’s announcement of further regional restrictions and the expanded business supports: We are extremely disappointed and frustrated with the further punitive restrictions announced today. We know the vast majority of restaurants follow effective safety protocols. The government has acknowledg...ed this and the rising COVID 19 virus cases have brought them to the decision in curtailing gatherings of all types. We greatly welcome the federal governments relief plan announced today but since March of this year the hospitality industry has been devastated. We are asking the federal government to implement the recent announced programs immediately. The return of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) to a fixed 65% subsidy rate until December is a strong start. However, it falls short of a return to the full amount that had been called for. Extending the program to June 2021 is similarly positive. However, it does not reflect the 12-18 month recovery timeline for some sectors, including restaurants, travel, and tourism. The extension of the CEBA program is welcomed but a much wider forgiveness is required. The industry is at the edge of an iceberg and there are bills to be paid. We are asking support from provincial and municipal governments in property tax, utilities, insurance and all kind of fee expenses that need to be paid. They have this responsibility. Furthermore we are calling for the provincial government to address operational expenses such as beverage alcohol pricing and be ready with a robust stimulus plan once the industry opens up once again. The plan should address support in growing business travel by increasing the dining and entertainment credit to 100% and consumer travel through a travel rebate program. We remain thankful to all those in our industry who continue to be diligent with operating during these difficult times. Although this long weekend will be different this year, we do wish you a happy Thanksgiving.
