Lord Selkirk is spreading the love Lord Selkirk School students are creating art to bring cheer to seniors in care homes and frontline workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lord Selkirk teacher Kaila Ladouceur and her Grade 4 class recently contributed artwork to the Love Grows postcards project. Love Grows is a new initiative created by Stacey Abramson, a visual arts teacher at Maples Collegiate in Seven Oaks School Division.... Ladouceur said her best friend, Kelcie Terrick, a teacher at Maples, told her about the Love Grows project on Nov. 17 and she immediately shared it with her students the next day. My students were so excited and so on board with it, Ladouceur said. It fit really well because we’ve been working on positive affirmations for ourselves to lift our spirits, so it was a natural shift that we could make other people feel better by giving them positive messages and notes. Montrose sends gifts and good tidings to local seniors (The students pictured here are in Kindergarten and are not required to wear masks in school per Manitoba Public Health orders.) ‘Tis the season for giving for Montrose School students.... On Dec. 4, Montrose held a school-wide, socially distanced pajama party to celebrate its contribution to the Be a Santa to a Senior program. Presented by Home Instead Senior Care, Be a Santa to a Senior is an annual program that works to purchase gifts for seniors who might not otherwise receive presents during the holiday season. This is our fourth or fifth year doing it, said Catherine Ko Heinrichs, who teaches Kindergarten at Montrose. During this time of year we want to help out as much as we can. With the pandemic, now, more than ever, seniors are feeling isolated and we want to help cheer them up. Home Instead Senior Care partners with non-profits and community organizations to identify isolated seniors who could use a present. The company then works with local businesses to place trees and ornaments at various locations, with each senior’s gift request written on a bulb. Congratulations Chris Young, Recipient of the 2020 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching, Presented by Canada's History Chris Young’s grade 10 students explored their community’s history through a project called Kelvin Remembers the Winnipeg General Strike. Through primary and secondary source research, museum and historical site visits, and seminar discussions, students learned about the connections between their school, city, and this historic event.... The students were encouraged to investigate lesser-known histories associated with the strike. By studying the strike through multiple perspectives, the students gained an appreciation for the strike’s complexities and its polarizing legacy. On May 15, 2019, the one hundredth anniversary of the first day of the strike, the students came together to host a special commemorative day at their school. #WinnipegSD #WSDParents #WSDTeachers #WSDStudents

Congratulations to Jaya Cosway, student at Collège Churchill, finalist for the CBC Manitoba Future 40! Jaya Cosway, who's just 14, has made and given away hundreds of face masks. Cosway, a straight-A Collège Churchill student, started making masks as part of Face Masks of Winnipeg, a group of more than 30 people who started sewing masks and distributing them for free during the COVID-19 pandemic.... The group says they have given out about 10,000 masks to non-profit organizations, women's shelters, teachers, businesses and individuals. Cosway took over leadership of the organization in April and is now the driving force behind the project, distributing sewing kits (with donated materials) to mask-makers and completed masks to those in need. Cosway hopes to be a math teacher and open a home decor shop someday, as well as continue to help her fellow Manitobans. #WinnipegSD #WSDParents #WSDTeachers #WSDStudents #KeepLearning

WSD creates its own COVID-19 screening tool and contact tracing system As part of its COVID-19 response, Winnipeg School Division implemented a QR code-based check-in system for all of its schools and buildings. Upon arriving at the entrance of a WSD school or building, visitors are greeted by a poster that reads, "All WSD staff, volunteers, parents/guardians, contractors and other visitors must check in prior to entry."... The posters also contain a QR code. School visitors simply scan the QR code with their smartphone, which brings up a digital form that acts as both a COVID-19 screening tool and contact tracing system. "All it asks is your name and phone number and there's also an opportunity for an email or a home address," said Kristin Insull, WSD's Organizational Development Officer. "The current screening criteria are displayed, but we don't ask any verification questions. We just say if any of these symptoms apply to you, do not enter the building. The assumption is that people are doing the right thing at the right time for the right reason and would adhere to those public health directives." "They press submit and it's automatically date- and time-stamped. It goes through the form software to our SharePoint server where it's hosted on a location-specific Excel spreadsheet, which is shared with the principal and vice-principal at the school, as well as us having centralized access here." Insull said she started developing the digital check-in system in late June/early July. It was officially implemented at all WSD schools and buildings on Sept. 28. If a WSD school visitor doesn't have a device, they can simply check-in at the school office. Read more: http://bit.ly/wsdscreeningtool #WinnipegSD #WSDParents
