Today is German Composer Paul Hindemith’s Birthday. Born in 1895, he was also a fine violist and violinist who later in life also conducted. Hindemith taught at... many universities and conservatories around the world including Yale School of Music, Cornell Music, the Berliner Hochschule für Musik, and was invited by the Turkish government to help found the Ankara State Conservatory in Istanbul. His most well known composition is the Symphonic Metamorphosis on themes by CM Weber (whose birthday is on Wednesday!) written for orchestra in 1943 and premiered by the New York Philharmonic. One of the things we orchestral musicians appreciate so much from Paul Hindemith is that he wrote a Sonata for every instrument in the orchestra (except timpani and percussion). He learned each instrument well enough that he could even play each one of those wonderful compositions which is evident in his expert orchestral writing. Happy Birthday, Maestro! Here’s a taste of Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis by the New York Philharmonic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2lZQW768fM #hindemith #hindemithsonate #hindemithsonata #SymphonicMetamorphosis #MusicicansOfTheWSO #MusicicansOfTheWinnipegSymphonyOrchestra #WinnipegSymphonyOrchestra #MusicAtCornell #YaleMusic #NYPhil

Today is National Philanthropy Day and we're celebrating this year's recipients of The Golden Baton Award--the WSO’s highest award of recognition given to Mrs. Tannis Richardson and Mr. Michael Nozick for their roles co-founding the Sistema Winnipeg Endowment Fund. This fund supports the intensive after-school music education program providing musical training for children with the fewest resources and greatest need. Read more about the significant meaning of this contribution and watch a very special video of thanks done by some of the Sistema students. https://wso.ca/blog/national-philanthropy-day/

It’s a common saying among classical musicians that the music world is a small world. So small, in fact, that the possibility of ending up up in the same orchestra as a close friend, family member, or partner, is more likely than you might think. Coming soon, a new collection of musician interviews inspired by the popular series Humans of NY where we set out to prove just that!

Born on this day in 1811 in the village of Doborján in the Kingdom of Hungary, Franz Liszt was the world’s first classical music superstar. A piano genius, Liszt had a remarkable effect on his audiences. With blisteringly fast recitals and incredible compositions, audiences would jump up and down with delight as they watched him play. For better or worse he took from Paganini the idea of concert artist as celebrity---complete with fainting women, jewels tossed on to the stage, and cigar butts treasured in heaving bosoms.

Join us October 30th when WSO principal trombonist Steven Dyer performs a gorgeous trombone concerto by Nino Rota. We’ll also hear a symphony by French composer Bizet written when he was just 17, a piece by Chinese Canadian composer Roydon Tse and, since it IS the day before Halloween, Weber‘s vivid depiction of demonic powers in the overture to his wildly popular opera Der Freischütz! #livemusic #halloween2020 #TrombonesRule #winnipegsymphonyorchestra #classicalmusic
