Gyms have a PR problem. So does the fitness industry. The superficial aspects live in the minds of the general population and this contributes both to many peop...le holding negative stereotypes which keep them from improving their health, and to the devaluing of our gyms during a crisis and seeing them closed. We need to individually and collectively show more of the other side of gyms and fitness in our brands and media. We need to humanize the every day people affected by closures and who rely on their fitness for reasons deeper than vanity. Working out is many people’s primary mental health outlet. We’re see it’s effects across the last year. Strength and cardiovascular training have well established benefits for our mental health. More people feeling safe in gyms would help more of our society. It’s not a substitution for professional mental intervention for some, but it’s all beneficial. How many people have a history of drug or alcohol abuse to where the gym has been the most important outlet to recover and keep someone from relapse? It’s more common than you think. And many of the pretty jacked people are in this camp. So don’t judge appearance because you don’t know their story. The gym is key to building confidence and self esteem for so many people. It’s part of why I believe we need to expose kids to gyms and working out earlier in life. Confidence carries into success in all walks of life and adds up individually and as a society. We also have a lot of people who don’t have a lot of social outlets. Many people feel very alone in their lives. For some the gym is headphones on head down and that’s it. But for many it has a strong social element. Especially this past year where our ability to be consistently around others has been removed. Loneliness takes a terrible toll on physical and mental health. And we’re going to see it get worse for a while. And do I really need to elaborate on the physical health benefits here again? . The list in long and powerful.
