The top 10 contestants of 2019 Win This Space Peterborough have successfully completed three mandatory workshops: Finance, Marketing and Business Plan this month! All the contestants will submit their business plan and financial forecast in early February and have an interview with the judges in late February. (Wish them luck! ) We are announcing the winner on March 5th at our Finale/Winner Announcement event so make sure to mark your calendar! Why Should You Win: I am a committed member of the local arts scene and downtown community. This new venture is a part of a network that I created to support commerce and our local arts scene. I commit a massive amount of personal time and investment into supporting the downtown and the music community especially. My other business was implicated in the fire last year and has not been able to reopen. This new business will help me to continue my work.

Business Name: Mink Magic Business Idea: Our vision is to open a beauty bar downtown. We will offer eyelash extensions, permanent makeup, lash lifts and tints, brow wax. Offering cosmetic injections would be an interest soon to offer. Hosting networking nights for girl bosses to meet and potentially make plans to partner together and just socialize. We wa...nt to make a connection with bigger companies within Peterborough that employ many women to offer their employees a special discount for their loyalty to Mink Magic. Mink Magic will be Academy offering courses for eyelash extensions, lash lifts and tints. I want to see how this beauty bar brings people together. Why Should You Win: Mink Magic deserves to win because we want to bring more beauty to downtown Peterborough. We want to have a space that creates more girl bosses through our Academy. We are all about empowering women. I offer services that are high in need, and I will be offering more services that will bring more of a crowd to downtown. I want to offer a free program catered to single mothers who want to get back into the work field. Business Name: Sweat Happy Wellness Business Idea: I plan to open a "Reformer Pilates studio" in order to help Peterborough become their best selves. I currently run a studio out of my house in Lindsay and recently invested in 5 reformer machines with hopes of expanding to 10 machines should we win this competition.... Why Should You Win: Pilates reformer studios do fantastic in cities all over the world and I think Peterborough would be a perfect location. We hope to expand and grow while creating new jobs for Trent and Flemming graduates with extremely competitive wages. One reason we would like to bring a Pilates reformer studio to Peterborough is because of exclusivity. There are currently no Pilates reformer studios from here to Toronto and therefore we will be the first in this area. Considering the high number of Pilates studios currently operating in the Toronto downtown core I think the business model speaks for itself. With the right advertising and promotion through social media, which I have ample experience in, this business model simply cannot fail. Having free rent will provide the business with the opportunity to provide affordable pricing for the first year and therefore more quickly build a tribe of dedicated clients.

Business Name: The Rabbit Hole Business Idea: The Rabbit Hole will be a second-hand clothing and accessories shop. Using a consignment model, merchandise will be brought to the store by consignors and sold in store. After the item is sold, 40% of the sale will be credited to the consignor’s account and paid to them after the thirty-day wait period has ended.... The shop will accept clothing for all genders, sizes, and styles, making it an inclusive and exciting fashion hub. Items will be priced fairly according to brands, quality, and condition. I also plan to sell locally made jewellery through consignment with artists. The Rabbit Hole will be a spot to find affordable clothing, while also helping community members to sell old items that might otherwise go to landfills. My business will focus on community, accessibility, and self-expression, while also challenging fast fashion through a greener consumption style. Opening a consignment clothing store has been a long-time plan of mine. I have worked with a local consignment shop in my old hometown and learned a lot from their successful business model. I know that Peterborough needs another clothing consignment shop, as there is too much demand for current consignment shops in the downtown. Many consignors are turned away due to the high numbers of people looking to consign their clothes. I have spoken to many people in Peterborough who say they are tired of shopping at corporate thrift stores but cannot find their sizes or preferred styles at local second-hand shops. As a devoted citizen of Peterborough, and a fashion-lover who is worried about the humanitarian and ecological threats of fast fashion, I feel driven to provide this service to Peterborough. In order for this business to be accessible and run smoothly, a downtown storefront is essential.

Business Name: Knook & Cranny Business Idea: My Business Idea is to offer the Peterborough Community a unique experience of stepping back in time through my curated vintage collection of women's dresses, bags & jewellery. I also will offer seamstress services for both the clothing I sell and items brought in from customers. ... As well, I hope to offer a space for other local creators of women's accessories & fashion to display and showcase their collections and bring a variety of one-of-a-kinds and artistic items to my Knook & Cranny Boutique! Why Should You Win: I feel that I would be a great candidate for this storefront opportunity because I have always had a passion for working with the public and creating a space that is both inviting and full of history & character. My enthusiasm & knowledge of vintage is something I love to share with others while offering a selection of conversational items from days gone by. With such a diverse inventory that spans multiple eras and adding timeless works from other entrepreneurs, allows me to offer downtown Peterborough a unique experience and appreciation for the past!
