Today was a new one for me and a reminder of just how powerful nature can truly be. We walked into a scary situation of a rattlesnake caught in deer netting. Sadly this is a common occurence in the Okanagan area. Today's adventure was met with some extreme challenges as not only the body of the rattlesnake was tangled but the deer netting was wrapped tightly around his bottom jaw. ... Thankfully we had an extra set of hands with us (Thank you Rachelle!) to help support the weight of its body which allowed myself to cut him out while Pete maintained control of the head. This was my first jaw release. A couple tense moments for myself being that close to the business end of a rattlesnake and he was cut free and remarkably uninjured from his entire ordeal. He is resting now from over handling and will be released this evening. Please let this be a valuable reminder to everyone - if you are going to use deer netting, please ensure the bottom edge is 4 inches minimum from the ground. Remember to observe, record and report any wildlife infractions or poachers/polluters to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 from your cell phone.

This morning 0515 while driving, we spot a poor fawn laying on side of the road. Our first thought was "oh so incredibly sad!" along with some choice explicit words. Pete gets out to pick up this poor lifeless body, the body is still warm and as he picked it up, IT MOVES! OMG !!!! IT'S ALIVE!!!! IT'S COMPLETELY UNINJURED!!!!... The babe was stretched out SLEEPING on the side of the road! In the bike lane no doubt! As quickly and gently as possible, Pete moved the baby onto a patch of grass we then left the area. We came back an hour later and Mom had come back to collect her baby! What we thought was an extremely unhappy event turned into a great way to start the day! PLEASE REMEMBER TO WATCH FOR THE BABIES. Moms regularly leave their babies alone, and while not always in the best spots, this could have had a very different ending. Reduce your speed and watch - babes legs cannot keep up with mom. When a Doe crosses in front of your vehicle, WATCH BECAUSE THE BABIES ARE LAGGING BEHIND. Maybe one for the Mamas here too: Roads are not a great place to leave your babies to sleep! Remember to observe, record and report any wildlife infractions, poachers and polluters to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 from your cell phone.

We responded to a juvenile beaver tucked up against the creek bank in downtown Vernon today. There was concern for his well-being as he was against the bank in daylight. This beaver was hanging out in an urban area, sleeping on top of his feed pile. After a quick visual check and he/she was observed swimming and diving, it has been determined that the only issue this guy has is poor judgement on where to build his pile while battling the high waters in the creek. Beaver kits stay with their pod until the new babies arrive the following year - then they are kicked out to put their skills to use. Just like any teenagers going out on their own, wildlife living amongst us don't always have the best judgement when cohabiting in urban areas.

Today was a day for teamwork as we worked diligently to free a gopher snake from some deer netting wrapped around his midsection. This is a prime reminder that when homeowners are protecting one crop they can be placing other species at risk. If you do use deer netting to protect your bushes and plants, please ensure that the bottom of the material is no less than 6 inches from the ground to prevent any incidental catches from happening. ... Today's release was successful thankfully but they aren't always when dealing with tangled snakes as the netting cuts into their scales causing irreversible damage. Please remember to observe, record and report any wildlife related infractions, poachers or polluters to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 on your cell phone.

Yesterday was an awesome day for our team. Not only were we able to transport the turtle to our partners at the Kamloops Wildlife Park Rehabilitation Center but we were also able to deliver a baby beaver (aptly named Chainsaw) and a duckling (named peep). We are increasingly grateful for our partnerships with local agencies that all work in unison to ensure the safety, health and protection of even the smallest creatures. The highlights of our week included the successful re...habilitation of the painted turtle and getting to watch the little beaver enjoy his swim in the bathtub. Please remember to observe, record and report any illegal activities involving wildlife, pollution and poachers to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 on your cell.
