Dr. David Wishart of the University of Alberta was recently interviewed about his labs work on COVIDmapper, a project designed to provide geopolitical heatmaps showing the progression of COVID-19, both spatially and temporally. COVIDmapper uses the Heatmapper platform and spatio-temporal COVID data collected from the WHO, Johns Hopkins University, and a number of regional health centres from around the world (1). It also employs modeled data from reported and existing epidemiological trend data to predict future COVID trends. Data for COVIDmapper is updated daily. The Metabolomics Innovation Centre is looking forward to welcoming talented visiting researchers from all over the world again this year. TMIC has just launched its first competition for a stay at its Research Hotel. Applications will be accepted from researchers seeking a chance to land one of the coveted spots at the Hotel. TMICs Research Hotel has been gaining popularity since the program began in 2011. The hotel gives visiting scientists, students and postdoctoral fellow...s office and bench space at TMICs central facility at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. They conduct their own experiments, expand their knowledge of metabolomics, receive one-on-one mentoring, and share in-person in the TMIC experience. Applicants will be chosen based on the proposal they submit. The application deadline is September 30th and the online application form can be found at https://www.metabolomicscentre.ca/research_hotel/application
Seattle hosts the Metabolomics 2018 International Conference The Metabolomics Societys 14th International Conference will be held on June 24-28, 2018 at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle. The scientific program comprises 27 oral sessions, 10 plenary and keynote talks, multiple poster sessions, sponsored luncheons, and networking events. There are satellite workshops and a range of social activities, including a welcome reception, an early-career resea...rcher mixer, a conference dinner at an exciting Seattle venue, and more. Our very own Dr. David Wishart, an Honorary Fellow of the Metabolomics Society, is on the International Organizing Committee (IOC) which is responsible for development of the scientific program including speakers, session topics, workshops and abstract selection. The keynote speakers are: Ute Roessner (University of Melbourne) Hannele Ruohola-Baker (University of Washington) Gary Siuzdak (The Scripps Research Institute) Age Smilde (University of Amsterdam) Masaru Tomita (Keio University) Registration is still open with discounted early rates available until March 30, regular rates apply after that. The fees are available on their website. To find out more please visit metabolomics2018.org #wishartlab #metabolomics #metabolomics2018 #metabolomicssociety

The new year has had an exciting start for TMIC with the announcement of over $6 million in research funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The investment is part of a Canada wide $328.5 million funding package through CFIs Major Science Initiatives (MSI) Fund. It will help to ensure the long term stability of TMIC as a world leader in the cutting-edge metabolomics field. We are honoured to have won a place in the prestigious MSI funding envelope alongside... 16 other national research facilities across Canada. And we are determined to use these added resources in the support and enrichment of the ever advancing scientific community that we are pleased to be a part of. Read more details on this award in the University of Alberta Faculty of Science news article "Diagnosing, detecting, and predicting diseases just got six million times easier". For a wider look at the CFIs funding announcement, see the article "Essential government funding announced for some of Canadas leading national research facilities" on the CFIs newsroom page. @innovationincanada @InnovationCA #wishartlab #tmic #metabolomics

The installation of an ICP-MS in the lab is a welcomed addition to TMIC. The ICP-MS is a PerkinElmer NexION 350XX equipped with a patented Universal Cell Technology. ICP-MS is the gold standard for trace metal analysis in the world. The instrument detection limits are at or below part per trillion and the productivity is superior to other techniques. The ICP-MS is used to analyze metals in wide range of matrices at TMIC ranging from environmental, plant, animal and human samples. #TMIC #metabolomics

We are pleased to announce that we have published a paper highlighting the exciting advancements made with the ECMDB, now v2.0! Improvements since the previous version: 13x the number of metabolic pathway diagrams 3x the number of compounds linked to pathways... added dozens of operon/metabolite signalling pathways 44% increase in the number of compounds in the database 7x the number of compounds with NMR or MS spectra a massive increase in the number of external links to other E. coli or chemical resources These additions, along with many other enhancements aimed at improving the ease or speed of querying, searching and viewing the data within ECMDB should greatly facilitate the understanding of not only the metabolism of E. coli, but also allow the in-depth exploration of its extensive metabolic networks, its many signalling pathways and its essential biochemistry. www.ecmdb.ca nar.oxfordjournals.org/content/44/D1/D495
