There is a buzz about #DistractedDriving and new #Traffic #Laws in the province today. There are increased fines and new laws in place designed to help us all c...reate safer roadways. A quick Google search will bring back some information. What we think you should know also is that everyday police officers balance a number of education and enforcement strategies to ensure and help create safer roadways for everyone. We say up front that "compliance is always free" and we thank and encourage safe driving habits. But we need to have a chat..... It's September 1, 2015. By now we all know that mobile communications are not going away. Our grandparents are on Twitter, Facebook and soon Instagram (if they aren't already). The point is that we know we are living in a connected society. We all want to "be in touch".... but at what expense? Can you not see the trend that has emerged? One of the number one causes of collisions and now people losing their lives is #DistractedDriving. There isn't a police officer that I know that wakes up in the morning hoping to catch people doing things wrong so they can write them a ticket. But I will tell you that they do hope that when they do enforce the laws people take away that the consequences from a ticket are way less than that of someone who may have lost their life or hurt someone else. No one wants to hear about someone hurt because they replied to Aunt Betty's post about penguins or sent their last "LOL" before crashing. Today it is our hope that YOU taking the time to read this message will never find yourself getting a ticket for #DistractedDriving. Should that ever happen know the WHY behind it now and please do your part to lose the phone and not your life while driving. To those who choose not to comply please know that our friends and family are many of the reasons we serve as police officers and the community expects that the police will continue to enforce the laws. We care about public safety. Consider this post the "warning" many of you discuss when being stopped. To finish our message here today I want to invite everyone to help share some ideas with those you KNOW WHO DO USE their phones still while driving. That means commenting below. Let's not point fingers here but share ideas or strategies that YOU use to stay focused on the drive. Do you lock up the phone in the trunk? Bluetooth? Power off? Like, post, comment and share. Let's work together to have the conversation and get the message out NOW. That's what #socialmedia is about isn't it? Thanks for being a partner with us here at the Hamilton Police Service.
