Last month I participated in the Covenant House Sleep Out and many wonderful donors helped me raise over $35,000 for this amazing cause. I want to sincerely thank all those who gave. Together we helped fight youth homelessness and trafficking, creating hope for the affected youth in Toronto. It was a cold and miserable night when I slept on the street and something I am grateful I do not have to do again (at least for another year). I had some incredible (sleep out) line ...mates like Doug Gilmour and Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons (pictured below) who graciously gave their time to this cause and gave back to the community that gave them so much. As we partake in holiday celebrations and move towards a new year, it’s important to reflect and be thankful for all that we have. In this Christmas season of giving, I challenge you to to try and give back, whether it be donating money or volunteering your time. Tonight I sleep on the street. Forecast is rain. But I'm lucky. I only do this once a year, but honestly, I still dread it. Last year I raised over $40,000, but I have not reached that yet this year. The Canadian trend for charitable giving is down significantly over the past 10 years. Perhaps this is a result of taxes rising in the same period by a significant amount, however the problems in our rich city and country persists. I truly believe that in giving you also receive. I am very passionate about giving to Covenant House as the funds we raise go directly to the most vulnerable members of our society, children and youth. We all benefit by helping and supporting the vulnerable and preyed upon. By giving you will receive a tax credit of up to 40% of your donation. Most importantly you will feel good about it.

On November 15th, armed with a sleeping bag and a piece of cardboard, I will take on the challenge of sleeping outside on the streets of Toronto so that homeless youth don’t have to. It will be cold. It will be dark. But for one night I can give up the comforts of home knowing it can bring warmth and brightness to the young people who need it most.
