Justice Rosalie Abella was the first Jewish woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1984, she created the term and concept of "employment equity" as Commissioner of the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment. Born in a displaced persons camp in Germany, she came to Canada as a refugee in 1950. By 1976, she was the youngest and first pregnant judge appointed to the Ontario Family Court.
