I try to keep the kiddos away from the typcial sweets and treats especially those with food coloring, at least for the most part. That doesn't mean no treats but we limit them and make healthy substitutes where we can to keep their immune systems strong. I definitely loosen the reigns a little more than usual this time of year, making memories but still try to make good choices.... There is something about the holidays that brings me back to my childhood. Spending time outside sleding and playing in the snow, watching Christmas movies, baking treats and of course having hot cocoa. What child doesn't love a cup of hot cocoa? We make ours with organic pure cocoa, 3% goat milk and some sugar. Pretty simple. We happened to have whipping cream at home so naturally I whipped some up. Topped with crushed peppermint candy cane and one on the side from Sweet Organics. No artificial food coloring is always awesome! Yummy! A treat thr kids love and I can feel good about. Whats your kiddos favorite treat this time of year? #hotcocoa #hotchocolate #itsallaboutbalance #holdiays #kidshealth #choosingbetter #motherhood #mamas #healthyliving #familytraditions #makingmemories #thepreandpostnatalnd

We slept on the floor last in support of @leesasleep campaign #1bedlessnight Thanks for tagging @mamaphysio The boys enjoyed the camp out with us and felt good knowing we were helping another child in need.... For every person that gives up their bed for one night Leesa is donating a mattress to a child in need. Research shows children without access to quality sleep are more likely to drop out of school, more likely to struggle with depression and more likely to attempt suicide. Every child should have access to a good night's sleep. This shouldn't be a priveldge. If you'd like to participate you have until November 30th when this campaign ends. All you need to do is the following Go bedless for one night and sleep on the floor Share your experience on Instagram using #1bedlessnight and tag @leesasleep tag atleast 3 friends and challenge them to join the challenge. Amazing initiative Leesa! It takes a village! #ittakesavillage #1bedlessnightchallenge #leesa #childrenssleep #poverty #mattress #qualitysleep #sleepforhealth #sleepforkids #sleep See more

What's in Your Deodorant? Sweating is healthy! Its our body's way of getting rid of toxins and allows us to stay cool when our body temp goes up. But as important as sweating can be, it's also something we don't really want to have to worry about unless we are actively trying to sweatl! ... Most of us don't want to be smelly or have sweat stains on our clothes. But what you put on your skin matters! Just as your body ELIMINATES toxins through your skin, it also ABSORBS what you put on your skin. This matter all the time but especially when you are: dealing with health issues dealing with fertility challenges pregnant postpartum dealing with any hormonal issues Mainstream deodorants have various chemicals and parabens that are hormone distruptors and carcinogenic. They also contain aluminum which can contribute to a number of health issues. So what are we to do? Well thankfully there are plenty of natural, chemical free deodorants on the market to choose from. This one is my favorite and what I use on the regular. Its clean, works well and smells good too. But there are plenty of others on the market. You may need to try a few before you find one you like. Some other good ones to look at include: Routine, Weleda, and Schmidts just to name a few. And as a side note: I have no affiliation or vested interest with any of these companies. Happy Friday Everyone! Got a favorite natural deoderant that works for you? Would love to hear what works for you! #motherhood #whatsinyourdeodorant #deodorant #naturaldeodorant #chemicalfree #mamas #healthyliving #eliminatetoxins #toxinfreeliving #chemicalfreeproducts #naturopath #naturopathicmedicine #vaughanmoms #yorkregionmoms #expectingmom #pregnancyhealth #fertility

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgpassed awayyesterday. No doubt one of the most influential people of our lifetime. She was known as a mighty force for justice and equality, for her judicial restraint and for her lifelong advocacy for gender equality. ... She spent a lifetime flourishing in the face of adversity. She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, feminist and champion for women's right. She leaves behind her legacy and has inspired so many to continue the work she began. Thank you for your work. May you rest in peace. True resilience message.

The load of motherhood has always been heavy. But we are beginning to see an unrealistic and unsustainable amount of pressure on women. Many mothers are having to make difficult decisions. Some are giving up their careers in order to care for their children and family. Some are continuing to juggle both career and home often at the expense of their own mental health. And as much as more spouses are sharing the workload at home, even in the most equitable hou...seholds women, mothers still tend to take on more whether its physically or mentally. Who here can relate to the mother's mental load? But we're hitting a breaking point, if we haven't already. Something will have to give, something will have to be left undone in order to maintain sanity, to prevent the level of pressure from causing massive collapse not only for women but for the entire household. And that's ok! It is impossible to sustain this level of pressure, workload for this long. It isn't you. You are enough mama! It's an unrealistic expectation we women (and society) have put on ourselves....to be superwomen. We are going through something we never had a plan B for. We are having to figure it out on the fly, and some of us are fairing better with than others. But as much as many of us would like to wish this whole situation away and go back to our old normal, we just can't. We can't go back to our old normal BUT we can start thinking and talking about how we can better shape our future. We can look at this as an opportunity for us to reprioritize things not only for us as individuals and families, but for us as a society. What do you want the future to look like? How do we create a better future where families can thrive, not just survive? These are just some of the questions we need to be asking. #iamenough #motherhood #motherhoodload #motherhoodjourney #women #mothers #balancinglife #balancingmotherhood #motherhoodstruggles #motherhoodishard #careerwoman #stayathomemom #workingmom #strugglingmom #mama

Motherhood Unplugged I'm not a new mom but a mom that struggled to adjust after my first was born and have since made it my mission to support and empower mamas I thought I was prepared... I thought it would be joyful I thought it would be natural and intuitive Instead I struggled I had a hard time with breastfeeding I had a hard time coping with little sleep I struggled with postpartum anxiety But what I really struggled with was losing myself... I struggled with my new identity I didn't realize I would have to mourn and let go of who I used to be and evolve into different version of myself....the process of Matrescence! It was the toughest part of motherhood for me and I wish someone had told me I eventually found myself and it was a bigger and better version BUT I wish I had known I wish someone had told me It would have made the process easier Let go of your expectations mama and get ready for the ride We all loose ourselves in motherhood but I promise you will find yourself again. Did you struggle after baby was born? What did you find the toughest? The more we share and normalize, the more mamas we can help! #motherhoodjourney #matrescence #motherhood #pregnancy #prenatalcare #preparingforbaby #adjustingtomotherhood #motherhoodunplugged #realmotherhood #mamatobe #mama #postpartumhealth #postpartum #healthypostpartum #vaughanmoms #yorkregion See more

Let's talk zucchini pasta!!! . If you haven't joined in on the zucchini bandwagon, you honestly don't know what you're missing! . Ok. I should preface this by saying I love zucchini, so I'm a little biased.... . If you're not a fan, no worries but this post probably isn't for you. . This is one of the best pasta substitutes out there, one you can feel really good about eating. . Its helps us add in healthy veggies and hits the mark for those of us working to keep carbs and calories down. . It's so good I decided to invest in a spiralizer a few years ago. Its one of my favorite kitchen tools. . If you're not convinced but willing to try, you can find spiralized zucchini in the grocery store. . Cook it up and try it with your favorite sauce and let me know what you think, I'd love to hear about it! . Yesterday I made a bologneise sauce with grassfed beef, chopped veggies (carrots and celery) and strained tomatoes. . And we do like the occasional glass of wine. This was last night's choice, smooth and yummy but thats what I've come to expect from California reds! They never seem to disappoint! . Already making zucchini pasta? I'd love to know what you add your to! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #zucchininoodles #zucchinipasta #healthyeating #healthyveggies #eatmoreveggies #proteinandveggies #bloodsugarcontrol #foodsthatheal #foodlover #fuelyourbody #veggiesmost #veggies #veggielover #proteinandveggies #foodchoices #pasta #pastasubstitute #naturopath #thepreandpostnatalnd #healthychoicesmatter #healthfuleating #eatwellbewell #f #grassfedbeef #moreveggies #lowercarb #lowcarbdinner See more

My final post on Healthy Eating in Pregnancy is focused on FIBER! . Are you getting enough in your diet? . Well in general us humans are not consuming enough, so it's a pretty good chance you're not!... . Most studies indicate the average person gets somewhere between 10-14 grams per day while our recommened daily intake is between 25-35 grams. That's a huge difference! . In pregnancy our needs go up a bit, with the average amount needed being about 28grams per day, sometimes a bit more. . And the benefits of fiber in pregnancy are numerous! it helps with proper digestion can prevent constipation and hemorrhoids provides nutrients such as B vitamins, helps with healthy weight gain can help prevent cardiovascular disease can optimize blood glucose control AND some research even suggests it may help in preventing childhood allergies. . Its pretty clear we need more fiber! . Some great sources you can include in your diet are fruits/veggies, ground flaxseed, ground chia seeds, beans, legumes, nuts/seeds, whole grains like: quinoa, brown rice, large flake oats, buckwheat, and barley. . Want to learn more about achieving a healthy pregnancy? . Send me a DM, I'd be happy to work with you in supporting better health for both you and your growing bub. . . . . . . . . . . #pregnancynutrition #healthypregnancy #pregnancy #nutrition #pregnant #healthybaby #healthyfood #healthyeating #pregnancyfood #yourhealthmatters #motherhood #pregnancydiet #pregnantlife #prenatalnutrition #prenatalcare #health #holisticpregnancy #momtobe #planningpregnancy #diet #fiberrich #fiber #dietaryfiber #fruits #veggies #wholegrains #gestationaldiabetes #bloodsugar #naturopathicdoctor #thenesthealth See more

Healthy Eating in Pregnancy . Did you know iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency during pregnancy? . As your blood volume increases, so does your need for more iron rich foods.... . If your iron stores are low prior to pregnancy you can bet you'll likely end up anemic as your pregnancy continues if you don't take proactive measures. . Getting properly tested in each trimester can help you get ahead of things so that you can add in iron rich foods and prevent putting yourself and baby at risk. It also helps to prevent you from heading into postpartum depleted and exhausted. . Iron deficiency anemia in mom can be associated with several negative perinatal outcomes including premature labor, reduced growth in baby, low birth weight baby, birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen to baby during birth), and anemia in baby. . Common signs and symptoms can include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, and difficulty concentrating to name a few. . Here is a list of some good sources of iron to consider including in your diet: meat (beef, chicken, lamb, etc) eggs beans/legumes nuts/seeds and dark leafy greens. . Keep in mind animal based iron is absorbed better by the body than plant based iron. So if youre not a meat eater that's ok, just be aware you might have to work a little harder to keep your levels up during pregnancy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #irondeficiency #irondeficiencyanemia #prenatalnutrition #pregnancy #pregnancyneeds #lowiron #ironrichfoods #nutritionaldeficiencies #anemia #prematurebaby #lowbirthweight #infant #babygrowth #pregnancyfatigue #fatigue #animalbased #plantbased #prenatalhealth #prenatal #postpartumhealth #postpartum See more

Healthy Eating in Pregnancy . Let's talk fats! . I'm not a huge fan of low fat foods but pregnancy is definitely not the time for these!... . Incorporating healthy fats is essential for your baby's development, particularly for brain, eye and hormone production. . Fats are also known to keep us mamas feeling full, satiated and can contribute to keeping blood sugar more stable. . Fat intake should account for about 30-35% of your total daily calories in pregnancy. . They've gotten a bad wrap over the years but our bodies need them and taking a a balanced approach is key. . Focus on the healthful unsaturated fats like olive oil, avocado, nuts/nut butters, fish/fish oil(omega 3s!), and seeds to name a few. These, and in particular omega 3's can improve mood, reduce inflammation, reduce risk of postpartum depression in moms and improve cognitive function in baby. . Some saturated fat is OK and actually needed for baby's development. So we can and should be consuming a little, too much can increase inflammation in the body. Saturated fats are found in meat, cream, butter, coconut oil, cheese and other dairy products. . Last but not least are trans fats, hydrogenated fats or partially hydrogenated fats. They are just plain bad! These unnatural fats were created by the food industry to improve shelf life and texture of products. They been linked to insulin resistance and pregnancy induced hypertension to name just two (there are others!). Read your labels and steer clear of these! . Got questions? Feel free to DM me or reach out to your healthcare practitioner. . Eating healthy in pregnancy doesn't have to be complicated! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #healthfuleating #healthypregnancyeating #healthyfats #fats #goodfats #fatsaregood #prenatalcare #postpartum #eatinghealthy #omega3s #unsaturatedfat #healthybaby #healthymama #babydevelopment #gestationaldiabetes #pregnancyhealth #pregnancy #pregnancynutrition #nutrition #foodismedicine #foodsthatheal See more
