I HAVE NO IMAGE TO SHARE. This past week has been a stressful one. It’s difficult to put into words the sadness and despair I felt after the murder of George Floyd. Most of us have had that I’M not racist, so I’M not contributing to the problem feeling. But, is that enough? Of course not! Contributions to the right organizations? Great! But in my heart I knew more was needed. And then it occurred to me While watching the protests on TV, my kids kept asking questio...ns about what was going on in Minneapolis and why people were rioting. Without thinking, my husband and I dismissed their questions and shooed them upstairs in an attempt to hide them from what’s going on. Then I asked myself, why am I shielding my kids from something big that is happening in the world? That’s when I realized, THAT’S MY privilege. I’m not white, and though my privilege is not the same as those who are, there is a level of privilege I’m afforded whether I want to see it or not. It is the privilege of choosing whether or not to explain to my kids the way this world operates. Whereas for Black people, it is a necessity to teach their children about systemic racism in order to survive, often at a very young age. After a few failed attempts at starting the conversation (we were nervous), we started a conversation that touched on skin colour, race, history, humanity, and change. I was surprised by my kids’ reactions. They had a lot of questions, but also unique viewpoints on the subjects. Our big take away was that, the riots will stop, the protests will subside and things will be quiet again, but that doesn’t mean that anything has changed. We need to keep reminding ourselves that it is up to US to fight for what is right for EVERYONE, not just for some of us. If you’re interested on how to start the conversation with your own children or want do some reading for yourself, @thesecretlifeofcanada has a great comprehensive list of books and websites to get you going. If you have any resources that have helped you and your children, please comment below. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere Martin Luther King Jr. #blacklivesmatter See more

We are now into our fourth week of quarantine, and things are getting a little better as we become slightly more accustomed to this way of life. In our house, changing out of our PJs and trying our best to stick to a daily schedule has been very helpful. Continuing to provide speech therapy online over the last few weeks has allowed us to maintain a routine, and the therapists at Wonderspeak are so grateful to those who gave online sessions a try. For those of you who ar...e a little apprehensive, that’s completely understandable. There is something special about face-to-face interaction that can be tricky to replicate, but Telepractice comes pretty close. We’ve seen that the little nuances that exist with speech and language difficulties are still very obvious to our online therapists. We’ve had some great feedback from clients and families about how similar online sessions are to our in-person sessions. Plus, you’re in the comfort of your own home! If you’re still feeling curious, let’s set up a short meet and greet (free of charge, but limited to one per person). You can email our wonderful Client Care Coordinator, Sana at [email protected] to check out how easy it is to do an online session, meet a therapist or just say hi!. We’re excited to meet you! #speechtherapy #telepractice #selfisolate #onlinetherapy #slp #community See more

I’m supposed to teach you, but session after session, you are the one teaching me. You’ve taught me that there is no ‘definition’ of Autism. I can’t learn about you by just reading a book. You defy milestones and start to read when other kids are just speaking. You learn different languages with ease. You pick up on the small differences between items that look exactly the same to me. ... You are a library of all the stories and songs you enjoy, never missing a word when you recite them. You may not smile at me, but I know you’re excited to start a session when you run past me into the therapy room. You may not say thank you, but I know you mean it when you stroke my face. You’ve shown me that you have your own way of communicating. It may not be the same way we express ourselves, but you are saying something, and I will continue to watch you and listen to you, so that I can better understand you. Those on the Spectrum are unique and tenacious! Those of you raising these incredible people always have me in awe of your unwavering dedication and support for your children. Thank you for letting me, and all of your therapists, be a part of your world. Happy World Autism Awareness Day! #autism #worldautismawareness

/M, B, P/ are some of the first sounds that you’ll hear your little one make as they begin to babble. They are relatively easy sounds to produce, as they mainly involve pressing your lips together. At about the 4-6 month mark, you may begin to hear syllables that start with these sounds. For example, you may hear /b/ followed by a vowel, like ba, and will eventually progress into more complex productions like ba-ba. For toddlers who are beginning to name things, there... are a wide variety of items in your little person’s world that start with these ‘lips sounds’. The word ball is a great example of an early word to teach the word starts with an easier sound, it’s a single syllable word, and it’s an item that is fun and relevant to your child, which can help motivate them to produce the word. Can you think of other words like this? You can also consider verbs! If by age 3-4 your child still has difficulty producing this wounds, or if you notice that your kiddo has difficulty pressing their lips together, your child may have a motor difficulty and should see a Speech Language Pathologist.
