With Thanksgiving in October we decided to start the month by adding something to our pumpkins that we were thankful for every morning in the preschool room. W...e have already filled up one pumpkin and have moved onto another. It is heart warming listening to our childrens answers to add to the pumpkin. There is always something to be thankful for and we have sure felt it lately. Happy Thanksgiving See more

There has been a lot of interest in obstacle courses lately, especially in the mornings. It started with a small group on the loft, but with everyone wanting j...oin as well the course needed to grow. Our children created signs and set out various objects to add to their course. Everyone was able to participate In the process with a lot of team work and patience. I wonder what they will come up with next !?! See more

And just like that summer is over ........... Time sure does fly when your having fun! Every summer at the centre is exciting but this summer felt extra special.... We took the time to slow down, enjoy each other and just have fun. Some special activities we were able to participate in were waterslides, a foam party, Zumba, and Oak Hammock Marsh. Every Friday we included a special snack into the program. Some of the snacks included unicorn bark, milk and cookies, chips and dip, donuts, pizza and a BBQ. We had countless activities all summer long such as rock painting, hopscotch coding, lots and lots of minute to win it games, bug hotel building, water gun painting, cooking smores in the sun, shadow art and many many more. We ended off having a potluck and a big lunch together. It was really nice to have everyone together before everything changed again. We had a smooth transition to the new school year and look forward to what the future brings. See more

Our school-age program had a very busy summer this year. They spent most mornings outside doing a variety of activities. Some favourites included; capture the... flag, mission impossible tag, soccer, grounders, and man tracker. Afternoons that were too hot to be outside were spent doing experiments, making slime, and playing board games. The children also enjoyed frog hunting, water balloon fights, and playing in the sprinkler. The centre was lucky enough to have water slides three times throughout the summer, a foam party, and a special presentation about bats from Oak Hammock Marsh. Some other highlights from the summer included crazy olympics, special treat fridays, and show and tell. We finished off the summer by doing a spirit week with the highlight being costume day. It was an amazing summer!! See more

Since school age has been opened for the summer the group has spent most mornings outside. They can be found participating in activities such as grounders, fly...ing kites, creating shadow art, splatter painting and more! The afternoons are mostly spent inside but are just as exciting doing experiments including bottle rockets and making their own ice cream. They enjoy just dance videos to get rid of some energy and really enjoy playing board games and Kinex. See more

Here are some pictures of our beautiful garden this year! So far we have been able to pick lettuce and beets. We also have peas, beans, carrots, radishes, tom...atoes, zucchini, apples and grapes to enjoy when they are ready. A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust. Gertrude Jekyll See more

Our new face paint prop box has been a huge hit in the preschool room. It is amazing to watch the concentration and creativity that shines through when the children are painting each others faces.

There has been some talk in our room about St. Patricks Day. We have read books and talked about some traditions that happen. In one of our stories it told us that leprechauns find gold at the end of a rainbow so today we made fruit loop rainbows in our group time.

The infants are finding so many ways to explore their senses. They were banging on pots and pans to explore the sense of sound. They would bang the pots then cover their ears because it was loud, they adjusted how hard they would hit so it wouldnt be too loud for themselves.

Woodlands Childcare Inc. 04.04.2020

The infants have been practicing twisting the lids off of an apple sauce pouch. This develops their fine motor skills and is also a life skill for when they have one in their lunches.

Woodlands Childcare Inc. 15.03.2020

More ways for the infants to explore the sense of sound is with our boomwhackers. Each tube is a different length so when you bang them it makes them make different sounds.

Expanding on the infants interest in senses, we had a taste test. We tasted; vinegar, lemons, cinnamon, powdered sugar, salt and shredded coconut. They did not like the taste of the salt, but surprisingly they all loved the cinnamon and wanted more!

Woodlands Childcare Inc. 11.02.2020

The infants were exploring their sense of sight through light and reflection! We hung our small mirrors in the window to watch the sunlight reflect off of them... when we spun them around. We also love all the small circles that shine around the room when we put our sequenced pillow in the sunlight.

The warm weather was taking its time coming to Woodlands and we were all getting restless. Here are some activities we have offered to keep our bodies and mind...s active in our room. We have been fishing, playing hockey, exercising, and trying out some science experiments. Always an exciting time in preschool. See more

Our children LOVE messy play! Not only is it fun but there is a lot of learning that comes with this type of play. We improve our problem solving skills, its ...full of social interaction, and even improve our fine/gross motor skills. As long as this type of play continues to be an interest we will continue to offer it in our room. See more

Our infants have been super interested in their senses. Anything they can touch, taste, smell, hear or see! We had a blast going bare foot through our sensory ...obstacle course with sticky mactac, artificial turf, and climbing rocks with grooves and different heights to climb over. After we explored the ways these materials felt on our feet we brought out bubble wrap to pop the bubbles under our toes and squish the bubbles with our fingers. See more

Our infant program has changed a lot over the past 4 years. We have transitioned our room to be: -nearly plastic free -calming, comfy, home like -natural by b...ringing nature in through wooden toys, dried wild flowers, leaves, sticks, tree stumps and plants -neutral colours instead of bright tones. We consider our environment to be our 3rd teacher. The 1st Teacher is the child them self: learning by leading their own exploring that comes from their questions and curiosity. The 2nd Teacher is play: children learn so much by simply playing with a variety of objects and expanding their knowledge through problem solving, creativity, imagination, cognitive, social and emotional development. The 3rd Teacher is our environment: by offering a space that invites children in and fosters independence and exploration - this allows the children to explore freely and learn. Here is a before and after of our hard work over the past 4 years of creating an environment that reflects our philosophy, values and what we believe quality childcare looks like.

We always knew our children were creative but since the break they have stepped it up! We have a rock concert everyday usually with QUEEN headlining. Our imag...ination with our kinetic sand has grown to people with moustaches. The farm yards we are building consist of a lot more realistic materials. We usually have a bunch of robots wondering the room and we are always very proud of everything we are creating. See more

The start of the new year has been awesome in the preschool room. Group times are still very popular and interesting. We keep our children in mind when planning activities and it shows with the concentration and participation during group times.

We are always looking for new ways to excite our children and expand their creativity. Recently a staff member created this amazing painting space in the presc...hool room. It was a huge hit and everyone had a blast. We believe in process over product and this is a great example of why we do this. This process lets us pay more attention to the experience. We were able mix colours, paint a new material, paint with friends close by (social interactions), experiment and be free with our imaginations. See more

Just before rest time, as we were closing the blinds one of our children were holding a pillow covered with sequins. Another child noticed sparkling shadows on... the wall. They were coming from the pillow and the reflections off the sun, so we turned this moment into an experiment. Opening and closing the blind and taking turns holding the pillow, we tried this over and over again. The children loved seeing the sparkly reflection from the sun on the wall and realized when the sun went away so did our shadows. See more

We set up the overhead projector in the infant room with our dinosaur toys. The light was shining onto our tent so we could see the dinosaur shadows from the inside and the outside! We were roaring loud like dinosaurs!

Woodlands Childcare Inc. 30.09.2019

The infants took a walk to the hill and found a worn down area that was like a slide! We spent the whole morning climbing up the hill and then giggling all the way down! Climbing up the hill was such hard work!

Woodlands Childcare Inc. 22.09.2019

The bales in our yard are still a huge interest while playing outside. Today the wind was a bit chilly so we built a wall to protect ourselves. Some of us hid... behind the wall while others felt a bit more risky. We challenged ourselves by jumping off two bales instead of one. Adding that extra height makes our jump more scary and exciting. By jumping from this height on our own we feel very proud of ourselves as well as a sense of accomplishment after landing! I wonder what we will create tomorrow........ See more

Woodlands Childcare Inc. 04.09.2019

One of our favourite things to do at group time is go on a walk. Today we walked to the big hill. We love running up and down the hill, gaining speed to see h...ow fast we can run on the way down is so exciting. Not all of us run, some walk, roll, or slide down on their bum. No matter how we get up or down, we are smiling and laughing the whole time. This tells me we need to come back again soon! See more

On November 20, we celebrated National Child Day in our Centre. This is an example of an activity where we asked our children to draw a Right they believe they have. Make sure to stop and take look to see the Rights they came up with. See more
