Woodlands Fire Department 05.11.2020

Good evening everyone and thank you for following the Woodlands Fire Department on Facebook. We would like to start this post by taking a moment to thank the men and women who have volunteered, sacrificed, served fought and died for our freedom. Did you know that it wasn’t just Canadian soldiers that were dispatched to Europe during WWII but fire fighters as well?... As a result of the war and the bombardment from Nazi Germany, major centres in England reported thousands of fires putting huge strain on the national fire service. In 1942 the Canadian government put out a call for volunteers to travel across the pong to assist the service. More than 400 brave men signed up to man six stations in six of England’s major centres - an estimated 30% of those men had no fire fighting experience. Making $1.30 per day, the volunteers spent 2.5 years fighting countless fires on English soil until they returned in 1944. Even though we are unable to gather tomorrow at our usual Remembrance Day services we encourage everyone today, as we should everyday, to thank those who serve and have fought for our freedom. As usual, if you have any questions about what we do or general safety feel free to leave us a comment or send us a DM! Have a great week and stay safe everyone!

Good morning everyone and thank you for following the Woodlands Fire Department on Facebook. Now that we’ve fallen back an hour in Manitoba and winter creeping in, we thought that we would take this opportunity to talk about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Did you know that an estimated 2-3% of the population suffers from SAD? Many people are unaware of this condition even though it may be affecting them. ... Seasonal Affective Disorder is a medical condition that affects even those who are not predisposed to depression. This condition commonly begins to surface when a person is in their 30’s and is more common in women than in men. The origin of this condition is unknown, however researchers believe that it may be related to a persons internal clock that regulates hormones and temperature. The increased production of melatonin by your body as a result of increased periods of darkness (earlier sundown because of the time change) makes you feel drowsy or down during the day when you would normally have the most energy. Another theory is that SAD is related to the body’s production of serotonin. This neurotransmitter (chemical in the brain) helps to regulate mood but it’s production is directly related to sunlight. Shorter days may create a decreased level of serotonin. What are some common symptoms? - Inability to concentrate - Lethargy and sadness - Increased cravings and weight gain - Irritability - Decreased energy and interest in social activities How can you combat or prevent episodes of SAD? - light therapy - seek the sunlight! Try rearranging your office so that your exposed to more direct sunlight during the day. - Be aware of your moods and consult with your local physician - Exercise - Take a holiday - Talk it out. Make sure you’re reaching out to friends, family and others to ask for help. You’re not alone in this experience. As usual, if you have any questions about what we do or general safety feel free to leave us a comment or send us a DM! Have a great week and stay safe everyone!
