There was a time when Oscar Night was appointment viewing. No more. The viewership for Hollywood's biggest night was 29.6 million, the second smallest audience ever and a long way down from the 43.7 million who watched the stars do the red carpet dance. Movie ticket sales are equally grim, dropping from 1.575 billion in 2002 to 1.345 billion in 2018. My opinion: the drop will continue as long as Hollywood continues to grind out big-budget blockbusters featuring comic book heroes the average millennial could care less about - and will never watch until you know what starts flying.

Here is a reminder that the future may not be what you expect, especially if you fail to see a rising threat (online buying ) and make some other big marketing mistakes, including offering sub-par customer service and failing to offer a clear point of product differentiation. The bigger question: why is the store, located in an affluent part of Markham, Ontario, still empty three years after it closed? An even bigger, and more relevant, question: is your small business on the same course?
