My life right now LOL

WorkingMommyJournal 05.12.2020

Our genes can play a huge role in how we experience pain, anxiety and more. They can also play a role in how we react to medications, which is something that I never took into consideration. Roughly three years ago after two surgeries and a herniated disc, I was taking a combination of NSAIDs and Tylenol to help with the pain. I developed an ulcer a few months later (the pain from this is difficult to even put into words), the cause of which was never determined. After an in...tense month of taking five pills a day, the plan moving forward was to avoid NSAIDs and use a reflux medication (I have only just recently managed to wean myself off of this). Inagene provides testing that helps determine which medications may work best for you and if you carry certain gene variants that may predispose you to drug interactions and complications. The testing was simple and fast they send you a kit with easy to follow instructions and a return envelope. I swabbed the inside of my cheeks, put the lid back on and dropped it off in the mailbox. My results took roughly a week to come in and I was amazed at my results. The results are easy to read, and you can view the medications alphabetically or search for a specific drug. I was shocked to find that I have a gene variant that can cause me to have GI bleeds with certain medications, namely certain NSAIDs (one of the drugs that I was taking at that time!) It made me wonder if I had known this three years ago, could I have saved myself some of the pain and discomfort from the ulcer and all of the medications that followed? Moving forward, I now know which medications will work best for my body, and which I should be avoiding to help prevent side effects or medical complications I might otherwise have.
