We've noticed something kind of interesting! In 2013 we removed thousands of Olympia oysters oysters from the old Craigflower Bridge so a new one could be made... and relocated them to artificial reefs. For years these reefs have been smothered by sediment with only a small number of oysters present but last year we found the large one by the Gorge Waterway Nature House had been cleared of sediment and was teaming with native Olympia oysters. So what changed? We noticed that eel grass had expanded around the reef and we believe it helped to clear it of sediment by changing flow patterns, and has been keeping it clear by sequestering these sediments with their roots. So we decided to look at some imagery of the area using the CRD's Natural Areas Atlas (a great free tool!), which has imagery going back to 2013, to see if we could spot some changes. Oh boy could we ever! These images show the reefs at Christy Point and the reef near the Nature House in 2013, 2017 and 2019. In both sets of photos you can see in 2013 very large, in most cases dense, eel grass beds. By 2017 there has been a huge reduction in eel grass and by 2019 it has rebounded almost but not quite to 2013 levels. This change was seen throughout the Gorge, not just at our sites. We don't know exactly what happened to cause such a dramatic decrease in eel grass during that time but suspect a number of factors were likely involved.
