The lawyers in our Criminal Defence Division have some significant concerns as to potential abuse of this technology.
Our firm has taken over presenting a fun little feature in the Sherwood Park News called "You! Be the Judge". Here's a sample: https://shopping.sherwoodparknews.com//worobec_law_offices
Worobec Law Offices is proud to announce that Stephan Cooper will be working with the firm as an associate after his call to the bar on September 13, 2019. Stephan was born and raised in Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta for both an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry as well as graduate studies in the same field. Stephan left his research to attend Law School at the Peter A. Allard School of Law in Vancouver. He returned to Edmonton and articled at a prominent... Edmonton firm, where he worked under experienced lawyers on criminal defense, family and immigration cases. He is joining Worobec Law firm as an associate, where he is practicing in both criminal defense and family law. Stephan enjoys being in court and travels around Northern Alberta representing clients. He brings a scientists eye towards finding what can and cant be proven in a court of law and zealously employs it to represent his clients. Stephan has been playing hockey as a goaltender since he was first able to stand and cycles even in Albertan weather.
Police cameras just make sense all around. They are a fairly reliable source of evidence, both on the side of the Crown and the Defence, and could prevent a lot of unnecessary trials.

With Remembrance Day on the horizon, we applaud this initiative by the Law Society of Alberta to recognize these law students who made the ultimate sacrifice before they could be admitted to the profession. We will remember them. https://www.lawsociety.ab.ca/posthumous-bar-call-for-world/
Impaired driving as far as marijuana goes is still an emerging area of law. Our criminal defence division is willing to assist with charges arising in light of these new procedures.
Since pretty much everyone everyone is asking about this, we are sharing this information from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association
On Friday, we were pleased to present Paul Welke to the Court for his admission to the Bar of Alberta. We are thrilled to have him staying on as a newly minted Barrister and Solicitor. (Photo Credit: Yolanda Chrapko)
This is why our Criminal Defence Division works hard to keep people out of this place.
We join our American friends in mourning the loss of Dovey Johnson Roundtree, a great criminal defence lawyer, today.
The Alberta Court of Queen's Bench judgment in R v Zouhri just hit CanLII. Greg Worobec was counsel for the accused, and secured a victory to keep the sanctity of our homes inviolate from having our doors kicked in for no good reason. Justice Wayne Renke quoted Mr. Worobec in para 162 of the judgment:... "I do bear in mind though Mr. Worobecs caution, in a memorable term of phrase, that a safety check should not become a blank cheque."

We are pleased to see this much-needed innovation being put into practice.
"Mr. Big" stings need to go. They often bring forth unreliable evidence that is obtained through means that could be considered coercive.
Mandatory minimum sentences can seem like a good idea. Until they aren't. Every case is unique. Here at Worobec Law Offices, our Criminal Division ensures that our clients get representation that is tailored to their individual circumstances.

There arent too many differences between getting married and being in a common law relationship, but those differences can be very important.

A team of students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta are doing a blog project based on Indigenous issues. Today, they've done a great job crafting a post that deals with case law surrounding criminal sentencing.

Today, we introduce the firm's newest member, Paul. The presumption of innocence is the golden thread that holds our criminal justice system together. The accused are innocent until proven guilty. Criminal defence lawyers are an important part of this equation. Police and prosecutors sometimes make mistakes, and it is the job of the defence to ensure that these errors do not result in the conviction of an innocent person.... I have served in the Canadian Forces and found my work in the military to be exceptionally rewarding. I saw value in fighting for the rights of those who needed it most, and bring this tenacity and honour to my practice in the field of criminal law. -- Paul R. Welke Paul Welke was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He joined the Canadian Forces right out of high school, and served while pursuing his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta, which he was awarded in 2004. His military service involved working on operations both domestic and abroad, most notably two NATO peacekeeping tours to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a member of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Branch. Paul returned to the University of Alberta and was awarded his Juris Doctor degree in 2017. During this time, he worked as a Casebook Editor for the Faculty of Law, volunteered as a Caseworker for Student Legal Services, and taught Constitutional Law to elementary school students through the university’s U-School program. Additionally, Paul was awarded the prestigious Juris Radze Memorial Prize, which is awarded annually to a student for superior academic achievement in Advanced Criminal Law. Paul joined Worobec Law Offices in 2017 as a Student-at-Law, and is expected to be called to the bar in Fall of 2018. He lives in Edmonton with his partner and their son.
Great news! To better serve our clients, our office is now open until 4:30pm on Fridays.
As promised, we are going to start posting bios of our lawyers/students. First up is our founder, Greg Worobec: Greg Worobec tried out several careers, including banking, real estate and entrepreneurship, but ever since high school he had wanted to be a lawyer. He graduated from law school in 1994 and practiced in Victoria and Vancouver before returning in 2000 as counsel in the now infamous Edmonton "Asian Gang" trial. Following the conclusion of that trial in late 2003, Gr...eg decided to continue to practice criminal defence law and opened his law office where he grew up, went to High School and despite his travels always considered his home Sherwood Park. He began his practice in Sherwood Park as a sole proprietor, and today continues to represent his clients in the practice of criminal defence law while at the same time managing and growing Worobec Law Offices.
We offer our congratulations to Justice Moreau on her new post, and thank Paula Simons of the Edmonton Journal for her insightful piece on the new Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench.
We've had a lot of changes around the office, the most notable being that we've added family law practitioners onto our roster. Stay tuned for more updates, including firm bios and the launch of our new and improved website.
